Max Mtls in Vray

There are a couple packages of medium-high poly cars I found online for an upcoming project. I have a smaller parking lot to fill, and I will get close enough that I can't go with 'lo-poly' cars.

Most online packages have the textured model in .max format, but don't list vray as the renderer.

Evermotion now sells a package of cars with vray textures, but it is expensive (and about 4 of them are kinda fugly).

What is the biggest risk of using the standard max textured car packages in my vray renders?

-speed?

-that damn 'overbright' warning?

-GI issues?

-or will they look really different from the rest of my vray materials?

thx!

First you might run one of the material convertors http://scriptspot.com/3ds-max/maxwell-material-converter on them and secondly you may just retexture the most offending items like the paint and save them in a folder for future use, I find myself doing that with whatever third party render engine I use, redo or tweak the texturing and save them in a folder or modify the name to respresent what they are for, hence your library quickly becomes useful for multiple render engines. I just find that a lot of times I waste a lot of time looking for solutions when I could just get a little dirty and work on the models that I do have and save them for future use as well.

There is also a trend for companies to now offer their product to include Vray and Maxwell, I would check out Dosch Design, I think they offer packages like that and I think they are affordable for the quality of what you are getting. Good luck!

The biggest risk of using standard max textured car packages in your vray render are the comments ppl looking at your render will make: "Hey those cars have standard max textures applied to them!"

In my opinion i would go for something else than dosch. When it comes to cars i look for ppl or design firms that STRICTLY design cars and not much more. Dosch does pratically everything, including the kitchen sink :D

Im not saying thats bad bless them for all their hard work and profits :D

but as i said, cars are quite time consuming to get them right. You dont want to end up with a mercedes that looks like a beetle now do ya?? :D

As i said my opinion.

Some of their cars are nice but they dont have that good ol replica feel to real life models...

ya, I guess one of my biggest problems is I only understand ~2% about materials. I am so far from those wizzes on the vray material site. But being an architect primarily, I'm the guy that's often just willing to pay for a high end finished product to keep my project moving. Evermotion fits the bill often, with their vray friendly models. But the $$$ can get quite taxing on the wallet.

Yep the capital issue is overwhelming at some points.

You can always make a car yourself ;)

Seriously though, you buy cars not so often unless your a maniac that likes to collect 3d cars and then show them off to your homies...:D

So ask yourself, is it more worth while to buy cheap crappy models every day, or buy high quality models once a month (for example) ?

That probably was a retorical question...
