portisgreg
Hi all! I've got an idea about getting myself a new system for 3dsmax. I was thinking of getting a laptop to work on and then getting a server to render across a wireless network. So i'd effectively have 6 processors rendering. AJLynn
Why do you guys keep posting these things when you know what the responses will be. Go ahead, buy whatever computer you want to, you know what you're doing.
portisgreg
If I knew what the responses would be then what would be the point in me spending 25 minutes creating the thread!
proces2
do you plan on the laptop being "mobile"? if so, i would suggest against the 17" display size. battery life is poor, they weigh a ton, and the power block is usually bigger than average - yet again adding more weight. i had a 17" display HP - ran great but too heavy to travel with. i have a 15.4" dell and i am way happier with it. performance is still very good - and i just have the resolution jacked WAY up to get the most viewport "real-estate". if weight doesn't matter - then ignore all this and go with what you got. manta
Wow...that's a really expensive laptop isn't it $4,000 ??
da-rc
A few thoughts, Why do you have a soundcard but no speakers? You should have more RAM in both systems. Do you really need Blu-ray now, it'll be A LOT cheaper in a year?
AJLynn
Maybe that was a bit too brief, but: There are tons of these "what system should I get" threads. People can read them. People can also use their own judgement. So why do people keep asking? The answers are always along the lines of "lots os cores are good", "lots of RAM is good" and "get a good power supply". In your case, the only thing not to love is the price. Just compare what you need to the amount you want to be spending.
portisgreg
Thanks for bothering to reply guys. Fair enough about most of these threads being a waste but I was asking more about the setup itself (laptop + server & rendering) rather than the spec. To be honest I dont think a laptop is ideal since I'd never need to take it anywhere however I live in an apartment and I need to have a system that's tidy and that i can put away easily cos I dont have space for a permanent desktop on a permanent desk. not to mention the ugly masses of cables that come with a desktop. I already have speakers so I can use those, hence the soundcard. Fair point on the blu ray, i'll prob buy a PS3 at some point, better value. I'd like more RAM but it's a fortune to add more RAM onto the laptop. Price wise, yeh it'll cost a bit but it won't be purchased all at once. I've just read that intel are dropping the price of their quad chips at the end of july so i'll probably wait until then to buy. Quick question re: net rendering. Does anyone know if you can net render a single frame? or does it only work with animations by sending a number of frames to numerous pc's?
