2007 VIZ file link to ADT?

Hi-

I've read several posts on problems with VIZ 2007 file linking, and have looked on AutoDesk's knowledge base/downloads, along with the VIZ help files.

Anyone have a definitive answer on whether or not file linking works any more with VIZ 2007? It was OK in 2006 I think (I may be remembering 2005 because I go 3-4 months at a time between using the software- DOH!)

Is there a thread or other resource anyone can recommend for more info? I'm hitting a dead end in my ability to think of what other parameters to search on for related threads.

I have a deadline in a couple days for a rendering that would have taken me a few hours using the old software, but our company upgraded and I'm trying to learn the new system. I'm hoping a workflow similar to my old one is still possible. (one where I can use models from ADT and lighting in VIZ)

Thanks for any ideas-

Michele

Oh, I guess I should add for anyone else interested, according to the VIZ Help:

FILE LINK MANAGER UTILITY

"If you use AutoCAD drawings, this feature works with drawings from AutoCAD Release 12 through AutoCAD 2005"

I tried saving the ADT file to 2004 and got the same results-

My experience is saying this stuff doesn't work anymore, but my deadline is still here and my boss and other managers aren't taking my word for it that the software seems to have changed. I'm looking for something somewhat official. Maybe the help menu's my best bet.

Oops. another wordy post.

anyway, thanks for reading.

here's what the model looks like

in adt (mostly grey image)

and in viz (green & orange ground, with ADT wireframe)

this is how it displays set to "smooth + highlights"

(and yeah, it's a very exciting building to begin with . . .)

Re: VIZ 2007 File Linking

Hi guys!

We also moved from 2006 to 2007 and had the same exact issue.

We found a solution though. It wont work as before with default settings. You have to create a new preset under File Link Manager/Presets and use it every time when linking a dwg file.

Check out the attached jpg image for the exact settings you should use in that newly created preset.

So..while importing dwg just pick that preset from dropdown list and it should work.. it sure does for us =)

Take care and let me know if it solved your problems.

Re: VIZ 2007 File Linking

micha,

i was having the exact same problem. i made the preset as described, detached the file, then reattached it with the preset. no more problem!

previously i had just been trying to change the reload options, but that was getting me nowhere. i can't identify the exact root of the problem without more testing, so i'll suggest that you try to detach and then reattach the file.

best,

andrew

Thanks Randy-

I hadn't seen that post (I was searching on "link" not "linking"! oops.)

Also, thanks for your hilarious (and yet of course very sad) post regarding this issue on April 4th.

I tried the preset from Jyrgen (and detached/ loaded anew), but must have something else going on with my setup as well.

I have a service call in on this, and just spent some time on the phone with Steve at Microsol Resources in NY (Reid Addis also works there, and was helping me a couple weeks ago)- Steve was able to get the file link to work on his machine, and it's now looking like there are some system settings that I'll need to change to get this to work. He also has a service call in at AutoDesk, so hopefully between the two they can figure out which settings allow file link to work. On Steve's machine, it was working OK when he changed (in ADT):

Options>Open and Save>Proxy images for custom objects:

Show proxy graphics

(My ADT was already set to this, so there must be something else going on. But I'm hopeful since he was able to link the file, after having the same display/link issue on his machine.)

I'll repost with any info I get-

Thanks for your detailed reply Randy!

Michele

p.s.- and, wow, the Max issues are really disturbing. I have a request in to upgrade, but $$ may be an issue. If I actually get the software and there's no file linking, it's going to be interesting. Yikes.

  • 2 weeks later...

It seems like this was probably a problem with my installation.

I now have VIZ 2008 on my machine, and the file link seems to be working.

I have the interesting fortune to now have MEP 2008 on my machine, and am running it with the "Architectural" workspace current. I'm hopeful that this won't add another wrench to my workflow.

Anyone know of any discussion groups/information on potential issues when using MEP for architectural work?

thanks-

Michele
