SandmanNinja
Lounge Room 3DS Max 9 with Mental Ray Hi All... This is my first interior using Mental Ray. Admittedly, the tutorial ships with 3Ds Max 9 but I still learned from it. It's interesting that the things I picked up from Gnomon's Exterior and Interior Lighting DVDs helped a lot during this tutorial. I used Photons and Final Gather in this image. A couple of things I was worried about: 1) Light Leak in the back right corner and 2) Anti-Aliasing on the window frame I used a small Sampling Radius to 'fix' the light leak, and then I increased the Min and Max Samples per Pixel to 'fix' the anti-aliasing issue. No interior lights - just the MRSun & MRSky outside and the photons that I'm shooting. I have some shadows around the furniture, reflections (but that was already done in the included file). The floor looks a little 'blurry' near the couch, but it might be the 'cheap' floor tiles that were used. I've measured my Reading Room and will try to apply the things I learned doing this. I'm particularly interested in any advice or comments, as (like I said) this is my first Mental Ray interior. Cheers,

You know who this is MR is alot easier to use now, I used to be one of the biggest MR bashers out there, I gave the new one a try, and pretty much instantly had a nice picture, the only thing that didn't get fixed or addressed was the use of large amounts of polygons, I switched to vray because of proxies, and until MR can handle a couple billion polygons easily, then I can't switch, other than that I really like it... Adrian Bold
Easier said than done if you're using Maya... Chaos still haven't commerically released Vray for Maya since they mentioned it in 2005. Sandman, i know this is an old thread but we've been using MR since 2002 with Maya. Personally i think it is a much more flexible, powerful tool than Vray but for Architectural work its probably overkill and vray appears to be simpler and better, because its apparently much more logical and hence easier to master to achieve the typical over-exposed, artist impression styled work. (we have an interest in the vray plugin for maya, latest pre-release build sept.07 but frustratinginly slow development!) Anyway, if you're interested you could check out some of our interiors on our site using MR. Actually, i posted one just earlier today on the AVC2008 qualification page. Manta - who says MR can't handle massive poly counts?

SandmanNinja
The more I study Mental Ray the more I like it. I think it's really grown up in the last two releases.
mattclinch
Are you using a SkyPortal? If not, it would probably fix your leak issue as it would jam all your GI through the window.
