Just a quick and maybe obvious question guys.

When texturing how do you all go about adding detail like bricks in arches, ridge tiles & bonnet tiles, angle bricks & plinth bricks etc? I guess they can all be modeled without bumping up mesh res much. Also do you all use box and planer uv projection, unwrapping and mapping textures can be a bit of a lengthy procedure, how do you add dirt etc?

Model it ALL I tell ya, Model model model:rolleyes:

just joking

apply the texture and throw on a uvw modifier onto the object, select the right mapping(box, sphere, .... ect) and bob's your uncle;)

dirt and so on is added mostly in a post production apps like photoshop, either before on the map itself or after on the render, but i guese now with some new 3d features in cs3 most will do it in post

unwraping is mostly used for game development where a building needs to be small in file size and the lighting baked into the texture. I would say that a minumum of the people here that does pure arch viz dont unwrap (maybe less that 1%)

Hi,

This is what i do for Arched or Voussoir headers:

Make an line drawing of a soldier couse header (ie just bricks on edge) to the required width of your window etc.

Then take that image into photoshop and I then have some individual bricks of the required type. I then apply these to the outline, transform them to fit etc. Basically I end up with a library of Soldier Header images. I then in max model a box with segements in and then either apply the bend modifer for the arches or a FFD box for the Voussoir. Then all you do is slap on the soldier header with the correct width and apply a UVW map (usually a box). Then as long as the UVW map is below the bend/FFD modifer the uvw map will bend/stretch accordingly.

This works a treat and looks pretty accurate. Oh I also create a black & white image in photoshop of my soldier header, plus going over the brick joints in black. This creates a really nice bump map which is pretty natural.

Hope that made sense.

No problem mate happy to help. I also forgot to say I do my Soldier Header outline in AutoCAD then just do a print screen and paste that in photoshop. I then save that as a PSD file so I can use it to create other headers of the same width but with different bricks.

I can go into more detail on the photoshop side of things as I just explained brifely what I did. I do a few other things to the image as well. If you want more info then you can get me on MSN messenger if you like.
