Mesh model problems...

Hi all - it's been a while. I should be glad I'm swamped at work though :D

I'm just trying to model a stupid tub. From an autocad 2d file from American Standard I stripped it down and created a bathtub "topo". I thought I would have no problem using Terrain to creat the mesh but here's what I got.

T1.jpg

The topo lines in Viz..

T2.jpg

The topo after Terrain is applied and interpolation is set. (Without interpolation the top isn't even filled in)

T3.jpg

The rendered product from above.

This doesn't look anything like what the actual topographic information represents.

Please tell me what I'm missing or teach me a better way :D

Thanks

Jeff

Thanks STRAT

I converted all to NURBS curves and CrossSectioned. The top curve just keeps capping and still misses the other curves.

Basically surface tools gave me the same thing.

Here's the Acad2000 file if anyone is interested.

HERE

Hmmm...

you may also want to ask the guys over at maxforums - http://www.maxforums.org/forum/forum.asp?g=0

i know NURBS will do this the way you want to but i'm no NURBS expert.

personally i'd either make an approximation of it (ie, not using the exact splines, but using a similar shape for speed) or edgesurf it up in acad. or rule surf it in acad then use NURMS in viz.

first thing you have to do is import it into MAX and make sure every spline is a different object, so "derive by layer" and uncheck "make single object"

and the first vertices have to be aligned. also the lines must have the same direction. to change the direction goto subobject spline and select a spline and click on the reverse button. to make more vertices in a spline goto subobject segment, select a segment and there is a button divide with a number. after it is all lined up and corrected the amount of vertices, you can add a cross-section modifier and a surface modifier...

(if those exists in VIZ... i think so...)

If you would like to preview while adding all those vertices etc.. just add the crosssection modifier to it and go back in the stack...make sure the "show end result on/off toggle is on..

ok, im finish the model. what i do ???

first I refine some splines, (the surface mod. need rectangles or triangles polys). then i creart new lines to connect the vertex, leter i add the SURFace Mod.. and mesh smooth,, and Done..

here the images..

If u need the model , just letme know.. i made it in max 5 ....

P/S- This take 15 minutes aprox.

Wow - fantastic lesson you guys. Thank you all very much, especially DelfoZ! :)

Sometimes it is much easier to find and existing model but I really NEED to know how to get these done. Most of the time models are not available and a client wants a clear representation of their choice.

I really like the 15 minute time frame too $$ :D

I'll tackle your lessons in full this evening after the daily crunch is over.

DelfoZ - I may ask you for the model in the end but let me try it first without yours present...just to keep me honest :D

Best regards

Jeff :)

Quick question - when using Refine on the spline is there automatic way to add vertices or do you just have to do it manually?

Once these splines are all attached it's pretty simple to add the vertex points since all the splines are selected at once. It would be nice to have a script that knows how many to add to each :)

Also - in connecting the vertices do you just use the "Create Line" in the roll-out under the subobject and use 3d snap? It seems to add more vertices.

i do it manually b´cuz i can put anywhere the vertex where i need it .. or u can select subojet SEGMENT-- go down and click DIVIDE .. u can divide the segment en 1 or more ...

and yes, all the splines r attached

and yes again. "create lines" under subobjets with 3d snap in perspective ;)

OK DelfoZ, Here it is... :D

With some practice I'll get the hang of placing these vertices so that the mesh isn't so weird. It actually looked pretty good until the end when I had to go around patching holes :D

My spline mesh

Ready for fixtures and installation :)

It took me longer to patch the various holes than it did to make the model and splines. I even set my snap settings properly but....

Anyway, thanks again to everyone for your help and to DelfoZ for the quick Tut on spline meshes.

J :)
