Eric
I'm working in VIZ with a linked Autocad 2000 drawing. I accidentally deleted my grass layer while working with my trees. I tried reloading the XREF, but the grass layer won't come back in with the rest of the drawing. If I detatch, and then reattach the drawing, I loose all of my material assignments. How do I get my layer back into VIZ?
Kerry Thompson
Hi Eric As I understand it, updating the dwglink should replace the deleted layer back into the Viz file provided it has not been deleted from, or has been added back to, the AutoCAD file. Maybe look at extracting the grass layer from the AutoCAD 2000 dwg as a separate file (wblock) and then adding this dwg as a file link to merge the data into the file. david whiting
Eric I've had this problem too and I've used the following approach to get the deleted object and its associated layer back into the drawing without wrecking everything else. I haven't been able to get the deleted object back into the 3DS scene with a simple reloading of the original dwg file. VIZ doesn't see that layer any more. What I've done in the past is to link another version of the original drawing...WITH ALL OF THE LAYERS TURNED OFF EXCEPT THE ONE YOU WANT TO RELOAD You'll now have two linked drawings to manage. When the deleted layer comes back in you will have to reapply its material settings but the remainder of the material settings will remain as they were. It's not pretty ..... and there's got to be a better way to recover from inadvertantly deleting an object or layer in VIZ and I'd like to learn what it is. Let me know if this works in the meantime. Reitveld
Dave, Yep, I have to do what you do. Not nice at all.
sgee
Simple way to solve your problem: In Acad, rename the deleted layer Grass>>> becomes say >>>> Grass2 Then reload, the Acad dwg, this fools Viz into thinking you have created a new layer.

Eric
Wow, renaming the layer, and adding another xref are both great ideas! I don't know why I never thought of that! I simply blocked out the layer from acad, and inserted it into my viz drawing. The worst of the 3 methods if I must say so myself. Hopefully this is an issue Autodesk will address in their upcoming releases!
david whiting
Eric If you're working with a set of ACAD drawings that others are having input into..or where your office has a set of layer standards, you may not be able to modify layer names in the original drawings..... That said, there's got to be a better way to get VIZ to see a layer or object that's been inadvertantly deleted than file linking in another version of the same drawing with the deleted layer reconnected!
