Edit Mesh and Material Mapping

I'm trying to apply materials to a solid object being linked in from Autocad 2000. I have applied materials to the object using the Edit Mesh modifier, and changing the Material ID for the various faces, and then used the Multi/Sub-Object material to apply materials. Everything has been going fine, until I tried to apply a brick material, which requires a Mapping modifier. Is there a certain map modifier I need to use for the selected faces of an editable mesh? Or am I missing something? When I applied a UVW Mapping modifier to the selected faces, and attempt to render, it tells me "The following objects require map coordinates...", and I only have that one object turned on. What gives?
