alias_marks
Hey guys/ladies, hope all is well. I've been working with an artist and a landscaping team and have had the pleasure of working with some great talent. How would you go about modeling this piece from the start? Nurbs you think? Think there is any way to model this with polys? I thought this would be a good brain teaser for anyone willing to work on it with a little insight. have a good one, M- *edit - note that I am not taking credit for the design/art, it was modeled by the artist. Hazdaz
I don't really see what the problem modeling that would be. Seems quite straight forward in my book. The only part that seems remotely tricky would be right where all the "fingers" merge fairly smoothly. But then after that again, seems quite straight forward. alias_marks
by all means, please, do share. I'm curious on how you think the best way to model this would be.
dinhtuan
HI, it this ok? just a quick test to see the way to model smt like this
manta
I guess I would start with a helix, and then pathdeform a cone to it, then clone it and rotate it a number of times, the rest of it would have to be fudged somehow...its a start anyway... batteryoperatedlettuce
The question remains as to why you'd want to make a sculpture like this, but anyway. Here's a box modeling solution using 3d max. There's plenty of flexibility in the working method to tweak it here and there. -edit: Max file added -edit: Alternatively you could apply the "twist" at the beginning when drawing the paths used to control the "Extrude along spline". In this manner the cross sections of the snaking tubes would not be deformed, as they are if you apply the twist at the end. Just a thought. -edit: I'm just thinking, perhaps I sounded a bit harsh up there when talking about the sculpture. It was in jest. It's an OK sculpture, I just wouldn't like to fall on it

alias_marks
batteryoperatedlettuce, great stuff my friend. No worries about the sculpture comments. Appreciate the time you took to share some of your technique. I think you've got it pretty well. From time to time, I just find it interesting how others are using the tools in way's I haven't thought about before so that's really the intention of figuring out how to model this one. great stuff, thanks again. btw, the sculpture is based off of a droplet from the sun. batteryoperatedlettuce
Thanks very much I'd be very interested to hear how the artist made the object, as looking at the image you supplied I would guess that the working method was quite different. -another edit: I also took a look at the work on your portfolio. There's some stunning work on there!
alias_marks
thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it. Also thanks for sharing you're file. I, as I'm sure others have, have learned some interesting stuff from this. take care, M- *edit-actually we are still working on exactly how this is going to be put together. You're guess is as good as mine at this point. We're also working on how to possible incorporate a fire pit into the center of the lattice. As for the actual 3d modeling I'm not sure, it came to me as an obj - hence the post to try and figure it out.
