Creating a presentation on CD ROM

Hi All.

A friend(who thinks, as I use CAD in an engineering role, I should be a whizz at anything 'design' related) has asked for a favour (for free of course)

He is running a project at the moment, developing an block of 8 apartments.

He has lots of great looking photos, some interior/exterior renders and floorplans from the Architect etc etc.

He asked me if I can 'compile' all this onto a CD that potential buyers can have, browse through at their leisure, then put a cheque for the deposit in the post;)

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best and most 'attractive' way of creating a decent presentation to exhibit his material?

I thought of a MS PowerPoint presentation but they're not great.

Can I make it autorun as soon as it is put into a drive?

I look forward to any advice!

Thx in advance.

PS It's a Bank Holiday here in the UK - no work 'till Tuesday:D

perfect task for Director, or Flash (Macrome.....errrr um Adobe.... haven't gotten used to that one yet).

I've always been a bigger fan of director for multimedia cd's. It has more scripting addons that relate directly to managing tasks directly on a computer whereas Flash has always been geared more towards the web. But both are definately capable of what you are trying to achieve.

You can compile a standalone EXE from either program and drop it on the cd and create an autorun to launch your program when the CD is inserted.

to make and autorun:: in notepad create a text file that contains the autorun which would look something like this....

[autorun]

OPEN=myProgram.exe

Then just rename the .txt to be a .inf

Drop it on the cd with your program and you're good to go.

director all the way mate, flash would be a nightmare for a multimedia project imo. Its been a while since Ive used it but awsome app for building custom cd roms, combine with photoshop, aftereffects etc works great. I had some fun making custom icons for my cd too.. some people find the lingo scripts hard to swallow, they aint to bad..

DirectorMX is very good but too expensive for a one off project. I would expect you could find something freeware if you rummage on the web for long enough. But I thin you could pay someone to do it for much, much less than director costs.

i don't think you should do anything besides PDF. your friend has asked you to produce a CDROM so he can market the apartments he is developing. he wants to send this CDROM to potential buyers, in hopes that they send a deposit check? ...and he wants you to do this for free?

director, while it may be great, will cost you money, and an undetermined number of hours for you to learn how to use it. you said your friend asked you to do this for free, as a favor for him. director doesn't sound like a good solution, unless you were planning on learning it anyway, and simply needed a project to use it on. this is why i would recommend creating a PDF slide show for your friend. it is higher quality than a PowerPoint, and should look clean and professional with a minimum amount of work.

...also, don't under estimate the amount of time you will need to spend designing the layout, testing the functionality, etc. etc.

...show your friend samples of what can be done, and if he wants to establish a professional contract for work, then you can proceed from that point. without knowing the situation, it sounds like the marketing of these units is a bit of a mess.

HTML would also be another good, low cost, low effort solution.

what i am getting at, use your resources that you have at hand, and know how to use, rather than making the project more difficult than it needs to be, and more costly to you than it needs to be.
