A fresh pair of eyes!

Does anyone else find when working on an image for a long period of time, it's easy to lose your objectivity? One trick I find works every time is to take your render and flip it horizontally to create a mirror image, things will jump out at you that you never even noticed before.

Simple, but effective..

Yeah, I find that too. If I can I work on something else and dont look at the image for some time.

It's an old technique. Most artists I know keep a small mirror with their paints and pencils. I also have a reducing glass (the opposite of a magnifying glass) to see how the image looks small (easy to do in Photoshop but you must save a copy and actually reduce it, don't rely upon the screen zoom). Another even easier way (with physical art) to look at your piece fresh is to turn it upside down.

Also, try walking away from it for a while. It'll look different after you've done something else, too.

Why, you don't get the same effect because of aliasing, or some other reason?

Yes. Whatever it is, there are errors that creep in to the display of images in Photoshop. Its probably a combination of the aliasing and the layering math that introduces visual errors.

I keep this at bay by trying to make visual decisions on images zoomed to an even number like 50%, 25%, because there are fewer issues at those scales. But if I simply select-all, copy-merged and paste into a fresh drawing file, my picture looks better.

The old ones are the best. I had a tutor at uni who would always turn our models upside down to try and make something more interesting out of an otherwise boring design!

Maybe it's a left side / right side of the brain thing or more likely the image becomes so familiar to your eyes that you recognize it instantly without having to look at the details.

Maybe I should try some of these tips with the wife tonight...lol :D

Yeah interesting. By the end of a day I can be frustrated with myself, as I think my images are looking crappy. Next morning, they look a million bucks (to me)....odd.

haha im sorta the opposite... ill think its finished and only the next day does the image look like crap
