I am just starting out... where to go next?

Okay all,

I am stuck at this point. I have a little bit of free time on my hands, and I really am digging the Archi Visualization scene.

Here is my background:

I am a chef by trade. For the last 17 years.

I have been bitten by the 3D bug.

I have about 4 years experience with heavy Photoshop/Web skills. I currently am on contract to redesign a game interface GUIs, and I am happy about that.

I am in the process of learning 3DS Max, completely self taught. While I am making mistakes, this is the process of learning for me.

The problem that I have right now is the research angle for Archi Viz. Where did you pros start off? Is this an industry that really took off when you where in school? How do I network to get my foot in the door?

Unfortunately, I do not have experience with Architecture. I can take a CAD drawing and render it into 3D though. I am a visual person, and I can read a plan and figure out how to do it though.

I am in the Montreal area. My question is do I just start contacting businesses and go from there?

What do you all think?

This may be an angle to start at..Your obviously intimate with kitchens...their layout, their functions, their pros and cons. I would perhaps market yourself as a kitchen design consultant. This might be your "IN" into working with Architects and Clients, building your capital as a design professional and also using your 3D skills to communicate those ideas. For two years i worked as a grill cook and then i worked for 2 years as a commercial kitchen design consultant and it takes a very keen knowledge on how to make a very efficient design. 3D is a very useful visual tool and you could make a big stomp in the design business with this knowledge.....restaurant/entertainment/event design. Hope this helps narrow your search.
