Aaron2004
Hello, I am working with VRAY grass by using displacement. What do you typically use for the map? Do you use a procedural map or a jpg? I was using a jpg create with photoshop noise. This looks good zoomed out, but zoomed in, the grass is very chunky and thick. Thanks! Aaron2004
Thanks for the info. Although I didn't find the post you were refering to, I have done a pretty extensive search on the forum and can't find anything about what map people use. Mechadus
I have found that using 3D MAXs' built in fur plugin seems to give me better results than displacement, or Vray Fur.. But thats just my 2 cents -Nick Kropat Sr 3D Artist http://www.3Dwebmedia.com

Claudio Branch
What do you typically use for the map? Noise and PATIENCE.... Do yourself a favor and just stay away from displacment. Instead, try creating physical grass using proxies. Looks better, works better, is better...
kbotnen
I have used bitmaps so far. Just using a grass texture (bitmap) on the grass plane, and let the displacement modifier use this to drive the displace. Tried to make it with just procedural, but didnt managaed to get it quite right :/ Very easy and fast (not to render neccesary) to get some ok looking grass. Guess it depends where you are going to place the cam. Going to do closeups? Or a bit mor far away? If far away you can probably get around with this method I guess. PS! If anyone have a way to do procedural displacement grass, let me know. -K-
Scott Schroeder
It depend on how far the camera is from your grass. Far range (150 plus feet), you don't even need displacement, a simple texture map will suffice. Medium range, you can use displacement and get a good looking result. Close in, I've found that using a combo of displacement and fur works well. That way you don't have to worry about overloading your scene with fur objects, with displacement and fur you can use about 1/4 of the fur required for most patches of grass but still get the "blade" look of grass. As far as the map, there are tons of good texture resources out there. Find a good one, and make a good quality black and white displacement map out of it or use a tight noise map, but make sure it's pretty much black and white. If you really fancy good looking grass, try using camera mapping. The downfall of that is your source photograph should generally match your camera height/angle. nelpiper
That's my personal workflow for 3d grass and vray: - noise map for the textmap on the vraydisplamentmod; - amount about 80mm (you'll have to experiment that yourself); - edge length close to camera: 1 far away: 4 As I said, those are personal but you can take that as a base. Good luck.
Brute Guy
Hi Aaron, I've just done some grass recently and we spent a long time trying to 'displace' to get the effect, we ended up using vray fur. Brilliant results, check these settings out, I added the vray mod onto a plane I imported from rhino, it was meshed to a reasonable quality. If its using too much juice, I often colour the plane that I apply the vrayFUR mod to, this way, you can reduce the densitly of the blades per area whilst maintaining a good thick lawn look. Hope this helps Marc Edited July 29, 2008 by Brute Guy pic too dark
