Kerry Thompson
Hi I am having some issues with which scene unit to use with Viz 4. I do a lot of modeling in AutoCAD and ADT 3.3. In New Zeaalnd, the building industry uses millimetres as the base unit so my models are built with one AutoCAD unit = 1 millimetre. Using millimetres as the scene unit in Viz seems to feel uncomfortable - things feel small, grids drop off quickly. The relationship between the real world built environment and the resolution of the scene units seems more comfortable with scene units of inches rather than millimetres. File linking millimeter based dwg files gives an opportunity to scale but importing millimeter based dwg results in a model 25.4 times the real world size. In terms of lighting calculations, I assume these are based on the scene unit rather than the display units. What do other metric users do?? stefkeB
I leave the system units at default (1 unit = 1 inch) which makes for nicer zooming etc... Then I set the display units to metric/meters. When linking an AutoCAD file, you have the option to set the size of the units in the imported file. And to use radiosity, you have to use realworld units! garethace
I actually only found this thread at the bottom of this thread: http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showthread.php?p=36611#post36611 There is some new VB feature called 'similar threads'. It might be worth the effort of being quite specific in what you call a thread from now on guys, as this little 'similar threads' feature of VB looks really, really incredibly intelligent and useful. I would otherwise never have bothered to look in VIZ forum for a 'Units' type of thread... which is also very relevant to the AutoCAD units thread. gareth.
