2007 Architectural 3D Awards - Call for Entries

Hi,

I was wondering (and this may be a silly question) do you have to be planning to be present at the Visualization Conference in San Diego to enter? I just ask because it said the awards would be awarded at the conference and, as much as I'd like to, there's no way I can make it.

Also, I'm not a 3d professional at all (I work in graphic design) but I love 3d modeling and animation, and 3d architectural visualization in particular and do a lot of it in my spare time. Can I still enter?

Thanks!

What resolution can you submit? The reason we ask for hih res is that the winner's images are usually published in quite a few magazines and books, so they need high res imagery.

A couple have a smaller dimension of 1944 pixels - wasn't sure if the minimum was an exact requirement or just a recommendation!

Probably a stupid question, but I've just uploaded an image for the competition, and the page where I fill in my contact details and image caption hasn't reset or acknowledged that it's saved my info (although I had confirmation that the image arrived okay). I assume it was still sent along with the image?!

entered 2 images.

was intending to redo them but when I sat down....it was like....uhhh non paying job - this will have to do!

the filefront thing is pretty offputting. i d/l'd it and it said it couldnt find my mozilla repeatedly. in the end i had to use explorer which i never normally use.

Following up on something I said earlier on this subject:

Jeff,

I think there should be a subtle shift in the entry qualifications. I think we should have the time frame (it's a year or so, right?) be for images/animations released within that time. Some of us have great work that is embargoed for months, sometimes even more than a year. By the time we get a release to show the work publicly, it may be beyond the qualifying parameters.

You can still enter, being at the DMVC is not a requirement. In the past winners who are not able to attend, just submit a video acceptance speech that we play live at the awards.

2000 pixels is more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule. You are fine.

All the best

As long as they were done in 2006/2007, you can submit them.

That's a good point. I'm going to change the text now.

Regardless of the submitted works number. The Awarded works (for the last years and the year before it). Those awarded works were the best in their field over the net.

The second issue I would like to mention; you are too late in announcing the deadline for this year (you have announced it before 2 weeks in the CGArchitect newsletter) people really need time to prepare their works. You should announce it before a while; you could even announce it before 5 or 6 months.

Finally everyone in the architectural visualization industry should submit the best of their works, its good way to keep developing your skills and techniques.

Best,

Come on everyone, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE submit your images and animations. ESPECIALLY ANIMATIONS. The way things are going, this is unfourtunately the last year we are going to do these 3D awards.

There are only 4 days left.

You realize you're asking a bunch of architectural renderers to submit something before it's actually due, right? Ha! You know we like to wait as long as possible to send out our work. :)

We plan on submitting some of our work, although having King Kong as the winner for the animation category last year kind of squashes any desire to dip into that category.

Thats the way I feel about it as well. I dont think my work is up to the grade. 90,000 visits per month to the site, but when youre up against big companies, there's not much room for the little guy!

Also, I had trouble getting the 3rd party uploader to work (so I am doing my bit)

Yup.... I bet if you took a pole there's a bunch of us (me included) looking at the calender thinking... okay I have 4 more days to polish!

Well in the end it's up to the community to decide if they want to have these types of competitions that they can enter and be recognized for. As it stands, it seems like the answer is no.

To be frank, I'm already overloaded with work, so it's one less thing I need to put together, administer and pay for.

It's just a bit frustrating when I try to do something for the community and try to help recognize the great work that is being done and no one can be bothered to submit their work. (Thank you to those of you who have).

The next few days will tell, but I can say right now it's not looking very promising.

i think these awards are useful, and important to the community. hopefully the situation will finish out similar to how the AVC entries have went the past 3 years. if i remember correctly, half or more of the entries often come in the last few days before the deadline.

I seem to remember the same thing about the AVC awards. I'm sure Jeff will get 200 entries in the next day or so.

Jeff

consider The possibility That The 2007 AVC is limited To only The Top 25

so The Best 25 are already competing in The BEST of CGA contest, already

This next competition is for all The 90,000 other people (like me)

The 1st 25 is now down To 17, 8 people or 1/3 have dropped out

maybe it is just Too much To do and still maintain The workflow at work?

The remaining of The Top 25 contestants will split up $110,000 at The end

The other 90,000 are being offered a $300 piece of hardware and bragging rights

ok Those bragging are worth Their 'wait' in GOLD.

i feel That if i entered into any of These contests i would only be Taking up

someones valuable Time (i still havent progressed as much as i would like To)

what i MISS is The monthly challenges

maybe if There was more participation Thru out The year by The people who

participate at CGA more frequently Then There might be more participation in

The 1x per year contest

and it seems like we are competing against people who are professional

contest participants and really substantial corporate companys who have

an unlimited amount of resources

so what about splitting up The categorys vertically, separate classes?

10

6

2

1 individual

????

competing against a 80,000 pound gorilla is just no monkey business

ok This is just my personal observations maybe i am Totally bananas

and before getting back To looking for some immediate income, how about

instead. having an every 3 month contest, This = 4x per year instead of 1x

1. interior

2. exterior

3. animation

4. some kind of Team work effort (o no not again?)

smaller events, more often = more participation

**

if it is Too much work for you To run The 2nd contest? what about letting a moderator do This?

Then The contest could still happen and you wouldnt be so overloaded. just an idea To consider.

just my Thoughts

To my suggestion about using a release date for qualifying--I just checked with the client on a project I want to submit and its going to be under wraps still. It did the work this time last year, but I was just told it can't be released for another year. I guess it takes a long time to build a floating city.

So I would never be able to submit the work. I would hope that by this time next year I will have much better work, but its still a valid issue for our industry. Similar contests in the illustration field use publishing dates to set a qualifying work. Maybe we should, too.

Another project I just learned I have to write a request letter to the owner (I just handed it in a few days ago) and another I've asked and been ignored. THAT one I think I'll submit.
