lefks
Hey Guys, I was just wondering if everyone usually makes their own vray materials or would you download free ones and tweak? Would using existing free ones on the net be considered cheating? Are you expected to completely make your own? thanks
Devin Johnston
I'm not sure what you mean by is it considered cheating, there are plenty of shader packages available for free and for purchase and I don't see how this is cheating unless you’re taking a test. lefks
hey thanks!! Sorry for the silly question ...I was not sure if people would make their materials from scratch...I usually download a material I like and then tweak if needed....
Tommy L
Vray materials are very easy to create. I usually make my own.

Gus_Rayvus
I think if you are making a portfolio creating all your own content is better.
Mechadus
I generally wind up making my own Vray materials, simply because it usually takes less time than searching the net for something similar to what I need, and then tweaking it. I also save out basic material templates (cloth, tiles, stone, stucco, etc) and recycle the heck out of them - saves tons of time -Nick Kropat Sr 3D Artist http://www.3Dwebmedia.com
Horhe
I rather make my own materials (as well as models of furniture etc.) because i get a sense that, well i made them. Its my material, my tweaking and my final effect. You can say that im more fulfiled . Its not a question of cheating but a question about what satisfies you as an visalisation artist. Sure you can set up a scene and render it using bought and preset materials. You can then post the nice image into a forum, add it to your portfolio, show to others, and get good critics. You dont even have to admit that the materials arent yours. But will that be enough to satisfy you? Deep down youll always know that that rendering is not 100% yours. This really varies from person to person. It also depends how advanced you are in the software and/or how much time you have for project completion. From time to time I stumble upon companies that have renders, of scenes that they bought, in their firm portfolio. They dont even bother to change the camer angle, furniture arrangement nor the interior colours. Now is that cheating? I think thats cheating your client. Its not your scene, its not your materials, its not your lighting set up. Its not your portfolio. I would like some feedback from you guys what you think. ipxstudios
depends on the project - you will end up making alot of your own materials for carpets, furniture, wall finishes, etc. There are lots of great vray materials to download if you are looking for glass, metal, caustic, and those materials which are not specific to the project. http://www.vray-materials.de/ I use both methods. wodewil
Witaj Jakubie Off course I must agree with Jakub. If I would like to make my own scene I schould make my own materials, tekstures, models and so on... But I do use someone else materials to lern smth new. I've studied almost every good material from http://www.vray-materials.de and it was very helpfull to lern smth new! Someone might have very good ideas to solve problems that I was never thought about them. But still.. that is totally true: if you would like to be proud of Your work you schould do almost everything by your own... sometimes it is extremly hard.. for eg... deadlines See You Later
