innerdream
I need a new monitor 20" flat screen or so and not expensive for cg, I'm using a Macbook. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Tommy L
I got a massive viewsonic for about 300 bucks. The picture quality isnt amazing, but if you have a decent other monitor in a twin setup to check colour balance etc, the size for the money is well worth it. Bwana Kahawa
We've just invested in a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW - excellent clarity, and larger than 20". It was just over £200 (about $400?)

Eric
Cheaper isn't always better - I bought a cheap Viewsonic - I think it was a 20", it was a widescreen model with speakers on the front from one of the big office stores (Max or Depot). The vertical viewing angle sucks. I have to raise my head up and down to make sure I'm looking straight at the screen to get an "accurate" color. I wish I would have spent a little more and gotten a quality screen - especially since I use it for business purposes, and not just surfing the web. My advise would be to sacrafice size for price. Come down an inch or two in size and spend the same amount of money or a tad more for a better quality screen.
innerdream
Thanks everyone. I used the word "inexpensive" so that cheap would not be thought of. The monitor has to be suitable for doing quality cg work, I don't have a dual monitor situation and I just want to use the one new one. I'll look at those suggested. In that case, spend lots. the viewsonic is ideal as a secondary large screen on a budget, but not a primary workscreen. You need something that doesnt hinder your workflow. BrianKitts
I'm running dual 19" gateway widescreen's @ home, and I'm actually really happy with the quality of them. I would have never considered gateway for monitors but the ex-girlfriend bought the first one as a present and I was really surprised by the quality.... so when I went to dual screen's at home I went and grabbed another. ($230 USD) http://www.gateway.com/accessories/product/1541060R.php?seg=hm They're advertised as HD monitors (rated @ 720p).... doesn't really matter cause I'm running them on VGA instead of DVI..... sounds more like a marketing gimmick to me, but I can definately say the picture is just as good if not better than the dual sony's I use at work. Macer
If you settle on a 22inch widescreen display keep in mind that it is just a blown up 20inch widescreen. Some people prefer the slightly larger text and icons and size in general, while others would a smaller size for the sake of extra clarity - ie. same resolution at a smaller size! Depends on your personal preference and eye sight I suppose. I've read quite a few reviews on 22inch monitors recently - it seems to be a good price point for cost/size. A good 22inch monitor is the HP w2207 if you don't work in a bright environment (it has a reflective coating on the screen). The software is rubbish (but you don't need it!), while the quality of image is slightly better than the samsung above (my second choice in this size range!). I guess it depends on whether or not you prefer a glossy screen or not!
innerdream
I'll check those out. The Samsung looks good for the money. I have to see what connections my Macbook has...
jophus14
I just purchased a 22" Viewsonic monitor from Costco for $260.00 and I love it. Might be worth checking out.
