Good luck on your search. From my experience, 30 years in the Architectural field, a degree doesn't matter for renderers. They either like your work or they don't. Have you considered a full Architectural education? You will be of a lot more value to any firm as most Architects these days can do cg and some of them as good as any specialist.

Best of luck!

How competitive is arch viz as a career?

I have a similar query although i already have a degree but in product design and am working in viz (using max) but for a recreational equipment company.

If most architect can do cgi that basically makes specialist obsolete..?

How valuable to the architecture world are specialist visualiser?

It's a competitive world out there no matter what you do. More and more students are coming out of Architecture school with the ability to do cg, not all will want it as a career though. You have firms in India, China, Russia etc. going after the same jobs as artists in the UK and the US are going for. Prices are cheap in those places and the heat is turned up. I think that as software advances and it becomes more of a push the button and magic happens you'll see even more changes. That said there is always a need for a specialist that can add value to a project or firm. The one thing you can't build into the software or any person is talent, certain things will be decided by a human.

It sounds very intimidating and almost risky dedicating alot of time into a career which potentially may be a bleak one from these shores... im not sure whether i have talent as i havent got to that stage were i can express talent using the software

I use max every day and want to have a career using max for as long as possible and arch viz to me seems perfect but i have huge uncertainties about it.. even our king jeff mottle isnt a visualiser????

I have grown up in the UK but i carry a US pastport as i was born over there... what oppertunities for visualiser are there in the states????

I spent most of my career at Gensler LA. They have an in house guy(s) who is great. They also hire firms from India, Russia and China. You can get a job but I wouldn't look at Arch viz as a huge money maker if you're working in house for a firm. You might consider the entertainment business, advertising etc., I also worked at Walt Disney and it was better in terms of pay.

If only was chinese or indian aye.. sounds like they are having all the fun...

The ying and yang aye!!!

Again the entertiainment business is killer with the competition...? what did you do at walt disney?

I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering on theme park design, Tokyo Disney Sea's and Euro Disney second gate mainly.

The monthly magazine '3D World' had a supplement a few months back that covered 3D training, including a list of courses in the UK... you could try getting hold of a copy. If you're stuck, I could maybe dig it out & scan the relevant pages (assuming I'm not breaking any rules in doing so).

I would personally think very long and hard about going to Uni at all. I would try to get into an architects office and learn from there. Its a very different approach to the norm but worth considering, specialy as you will avoid the £16k ish tuition and loans debts that go with Uni these days!

I went to Uni, got the degree and the debt to go with it. I studied Technical Illustration which lead me into 3D work, which lead to Architectural work and I now work in an architects office.

I have a mate who didnt go to Uni, started at an architects, specialised in 3D and now works at one of the UK's top Visulisation studios.

Food for thought...

Its easy to think yeah, go to Uni, get a qualification and everything will be rosy. Its not that easy and knowing what I do now I dont think I'd go to Uni if I was to do things again.

well...you started your thread with "im a noob here" and you want to learn arch vis. Welcome to a forum frequented by alot of pro's and experienced artyists. If you dont like the advice they give, or you are inclined to think you know better already, then they wont keep giving you advice for very long.

For what its worth, the experience of going to uni is without parallel in my opinion. Many regard it as the best years of their lives. If you can afford it, do it. If your unsure about what you want to do as a career (most pre-grads are) then do something generic/academic.
