Guest nazcaLine
i want to buy a notebook, the programs i use are 3dmax 8 (or 9, it's the same), photoshop 7, flash 8 and autocad 2006. the problem is that ALL new laptops bring windows vista installed, i tried to find windows xp laptops but they're very scarce and expensive, and out of stock most of the times. what can i do?? a friend of mine has vista in his desktop and syas he has no problem; but he has a nvidia graphics card and the laptops with a nvidiia card are much more expensive and scarce again!!(the sony vaio i want only has an integrated video card) i know i can instal xp after that, but it would be a pain in the ass (and i would have to buy xp sp2!!). what can i do??? any of you has a sony vaio with the programs i mentioned??? what are the problems??? any help or suggestions, please ... Crazy Homeless Guy
i believe dell started re-introduced XP as an option when ordering a laptop. ...and i wouldn't recommend on board video for graphic/3d work.
Tommy L
I wouldnt recommend the Vaio. Seems you pay alot and dont get much performance. I bought a Dell E1705, nvidia go 7900, core2duo 2.0, 2g RAM and its been a truly fantastic workstation. Its heavy though, but thats the only drawback. Guest nazcaLine
Tommy: thanks for the advice, i was in love with the vaio. but you have vista or XP? if you have vista, was it trouble for you? if you have XP, where did you buy it?? CHG: i'll check the Dells, thanks. But in this forum i read in some posts bad comments on the dells, basically hardware problems. is it true? what's your experiencie? richmondlu
alienware still offers xp and they have enough power to run a small town.
Tommy L
xp- no problems. I had a driver issue with the sound card which was common to the model (found alot of grumbles about it online) but I wiped the machine and re-installed windows and all the drivers to get rid of the shit that comes on a Dell machine anyway. XP came with the machine. Like I said, I would recommend this laptop to anyone who wants power on a budget and doesnt mind it being heavy. Also, I didnt buy direct from Dell. I got it from an ebay store. It cost 2k, but that was a while ago. I think they came down in price the day after I bought it, but that always happens! AJLynn
I've had issues with Dells from Ebay sellers - Dell refused to honor the waranty because they claimed they couldn't verify it had all original parts if it had come from an unauthorized seller. (It was ridiculous but there was no arguing with these guys.) Anyway, yeah, you really want XP and a real video card that doesn't have shared, "TurboCache" or "HyperMemory" memory. Those last two terms are actually euphemisms for slow, even though they sound fast. So the most obvious solution is a Macbook Pro with Bootcamp. Tommy L
If youre on a budget, why dont you buy a desktop? The Dell really is quite un-portable.
AJLynn
At least upgrade to the ATI card - it's HyperMemory but it's got 128MB of real memory on it and it's way better than the GMA950.
