command line rendering

is this possible with max and mental ray? - without stand alone mental ray? i was reading something about rendering, making a small change to the database (like an alteration to a diffuse color) and only those effected pixels would need to re-render. sounds like a mammoth time saver to me... is it possible?

if anyone has an idea of where i could start to look for something like this id appreciate it....

If you mean that you've already rendered a frame, and then can command a re-render of a specified few pixels, it sounds too far out to be possible. Because that would either mean image manipulation, or that the renderer has somehow buffered the frame's information somewhere. More likely, I haven't understood what you mean.
