AJLynn
That does qualify as small in many parts of Texas.

Four Fireplaces....they know how to cool down here come a cold spell the heating systems suck...not mention the 'rustic' hearth and "traditional" aspects of homes are really big items. Don't know about your fees but 350k WILL buy what they're interested in. Basically a a fairly large ranch with an oversized garage....stacked as full of fancy stuff up to 350k. kainoa
That would cost more than double here in Hawaii (excluding the Big Island).
louis.cho
Is it nt too much? An average american family have 1,2 child. Personnaly, I love house at human scale; four fireplace, four bathroom...where is the common life? I don't know a lot aboutr that desing but all taht money...if that was spend on better materials and better furnishing, is the general life quality should be upgraded? All new houses, they all concentrated on more square feet...this is the rule? I hope I'am wrong. I personaly pefer a small, practical and ery well equiped house. AJLynn
He said "retirement home" - no kids, just him, maybe a wife, and they're old. I love the use of the word "upgrade".
mskin
i don't know... i grew up with four siblings and one bathroom. i currently have one wood stove and i blow threw 4 cords of wood a year. what the heck would you do with 4 fireplaces? i have three, wood stove tucked in one and rarely use one of the others.... its and old house though (150 years). Anyway.... id rather see a smaller well designed compact house... intelligent layout, central fire pit... a garage and a work shed.

Did you consider that energy audit I suggested? Sounds like your house could use a blanket. I hate ranch houses, except when they're part of a ranch. I used to enjoy seeing cows hanging out on the porches of some houses in and around Oklahoma, where I lived and visited often afterwards. A ranch house should be situated among livestock, not suburban lawns. Value-engineering gone mainstream? I hope that guy keeps a few bucks in the budget for a storm cellar, its surprising how many homes in tornado alley lack any meaningful shelter, they're nailed to a flat slab, or worse yet, tied down by cables and stakes at the trailer park (aka tornado bait). Aaron2004
Well, since he's probably older, his choices are either a ranch or an elevator.

Ok, to be the devil's advocate... They are building on a budget - $350,000.00 Not rich - that's right $350,000.00 is not considered rich any more, upper middle class or new money, whatever it's called now Here's a scenerio - They bought a house when they were a working class family for $45,000 - $60,000 in the 70's in a nice area that they sold for $300,000 - $500,000. Now they have $350,000.00 to build a nice retirement home. They also may have grandchildren along with several children that will come to visit. Hence, the four bedrooms. They also may be building a house that is similar to neighboring houses in terms of ammenities and size so they can get top dollar for it when they pass on their estate. I really don't see anything to mock here. Nothing out of the ordinary in happening.

I didn't want to mock about these people I wanted to mock about this: I think that's about the lifestyle. these kind of house often lack of common life and are so huge for a small permanent family that make the life even more individual. maybe a house build for 40K in the 70's is now sold for 300K BUT people get more and more loan to get it.
