Aaron2004
Hello, I have attached two images...one of my displacement map and one of the resulting render. The render shows the curb bumping up above the road...I just want curb to stay in one place and for the map to create expansion joints down into the curb. I realize that having an all white map with black lines would lend itself to raising up...but it does the same thing if I have a near-black background with black lines. The displacement is set at .075 right now. I'm afraid that if I go any lower, you won't be able to see the joints. Thanks! Aaron
Chad Warner
use the "shift" option on the displacement modifier, and put in a negative value. This will cause the whole piece of geometry to shift back down.
Tommy L
You could set a negative displacement and invert your map.
Aaron2004
MMMm...I guess now is a good time to ask what the purpose of the dispacement modifier is. I've only been using texture displacement now for a while and it works fine (except for now). Is the only purpose of the modifier to give you more options in cases like this? By the way, thanks for the advice! Aaron
Tommy L
You mean the Vray displacement modifier?
Aaron2004
Yeah...VRAY...sorry
Tommy L
I think you should read the literature on what the three diferent types of vray displacement modifier are. This not only lets you know which to choose for each situation, but describes whats happening under the hood.
Trevor Tizard
You can also put a thin black line along the botton of your displacement map to ground it - or just us a bump map.
Aaron2004
I tried using the VRAY displacement modifier and it doesn't play well with multi/sub objects. It displaces all the textures..not just the one that I need.
Mechadus
For expansion joints in curbs I like to loft the curbs, then use a vray material with a gradient ramp for color and bump... Within the loft object you can set texture repeating to get the desired distance between joints - with a bump map and proper diffuse map you can get almost exactly the same results as a displacement without the render times.. Just my 2 cents tho
