Tommy Burns
Hi all I was wondering if anyone knows the solution to exporting from SU and importing the model into Max and all the objects come in on their appropriate layers. So it is easy to select objects instead of the objects coming in in groups and blocks. In other words how can I select the objects by layer. Also is there any difference to how this is done in SU 6? Thanks Tommy
AJLynn
Have you tried the GroupByLayer script?
aaron-cds
I export to dwg and then import with the Layer, Blocks as Node Hierarchy option. You end up having a ton of identical layer names in the select by name box but if you select the layer in the layer manager then hit select objects in current layer you can select every object on a particular layer for assigning materials. Then again, that's just one way to do it. You can export as 3ds and use the bomb / groupbylayer rubie scripts. I wish there was an easy way. Unfortunately, each way has it's drawbacks. If autodesk could just work with google to come up with a sketchup plug-in that would solve so many problems. I wish I could do everything in Max. I suppose that would make my life easier. I just can't give up the ease of modeling in sketchup.
CHE
I export the model by pieces/per layer to 3ds format. I use the "export only current selection" option in the 3ds export options dialog box. So I end up with a couple of 3ds files (doors, windows, walls, etc). Then I just import those files into a new scene in 3dsmax and do the obvious cleaning to the imported geometry. I hope it helps. AJLynn
I worked for an interiors firm where we did it that way. It was necessary because we did a lot of office floors and with all the crap in there it was impossible to export one 3ds file - also, having a bunch of different parts going into Max, if anything obviously should be instanced you can import just one and get the instancing done quickly. Tommy Burns
Thanks a million lads for all those tips and I can't believe how quick I got the replies incredible!!!! I have been trying the different methods for the last hour and the group by Layer script is cool as is selecting by layer in Max. I think I will be using the dwg method cos it's splits up the model better than the 3Ds way. In detailed models importing in pieces seems the way to go also. This was my first post and I'm very impressed with you guys hope I can be as helpful from now on. I actually model in Microstation all the time and bring dwg into max athough as one of you said I wish Autodesk would have a word with sketchup's exporting department Thanks again From one happy camper!!!!
