So do you render the scene with GI, lights etc first... then overlay the AO over that?

 

Thats how I understood it and tried the other day anyway ;)

 

But if we had to render with GI in the first place, what speed beenfit would we get? since rendering with GI as it is is time consuming..

 

I thought. we just do a plain render with out GI as a beauty pass. and then blend the AO pass over it in Photoshop, to simulate the GI effect without GI :)

yes exactly

 

 

yeah the whole point is you dont need to have any GI as were faking it with AO.

 

it does work with physical camera also. just remember to turn off exposure in the camera settings and also the colour mapping needs to be left at defaults as any tweaks in there will have an effect on the image.
