Stephen Thomas Posted July 20, 2007 Share Posted July 20, 2007 I've heard people mention that exr files give them 'more control' over the finshed output than hdr files, but never elaborate on this. Why, other than smaller file size, is exr format preferable to hdr? Is it to do with the ability to store other channels of data such as diffuse, specular etc? If so, how is this utilised in post production? What software is best for image manipulation; AE, Combustion? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Stephen Thomas Posted July 20, 2007 Author Share Posted July 20, 2007 Actually I've just noticed in 3ds max that the channels you can add are limited and don't include the ones I mentioned above. Would it be better to output render elements to combustion instead, or in combination with exr background layer perhaps? Anyone with experience of using this workflow? colinsmith Posted July 20, 2007 Share Posted July 20, 2007 Not sure on the MAX side of things, but had a bit of a look at the OpenEXR plugins for a project I'll be doing. In this case it turned out we won't go that way, so for now... I know very little on the practicalities. I did buy a Lightwave plugin that supports all the EXR channels though, and got the OpenEXR plugin that works under After Effects CS3, and that should give you free range on which channels you want to keep seperate.... some day I will have time to play with them a bit ;-) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
