RyanSpaulding
Just a note for those looking for a new comp... Intel is dropping prices on their chips by about 50% on July 22nd to combat AMD's AM2 processors being released. I was just about to buy a comp too. Must....wait.... AJLynn
how much of a price drop can we expect for the intel macs? Who knows what Apple will do, and why are you bothering to ask - you only like AutoCAD and Max anyway, and with your taste you wouldn't properly appreciate a Mac. Here are the expectations, shamelessly copied, keep in mind these are for bulk-priced OEM chips, that I make no guarantees about what price you'll actually be able to get them for and the formatting is model, GHZ, FSB, old price, new price: Core2 Quad: QX6850 3.0 1333 - $999 QX6800 2.93 1066 - $999 Q6700 2.66 1066 - $530 Q6600 2.4 1066 $530 $266 Core2 Duo 4MB Cache: E6850 3.0 1333 - $266 E6750 2.66 1333 - $183 E6550 2.33 1333 - $163 E6540 2.33 1333 - $163 Core2 Duo 2MB Cache: E4500 2.2 800 - $133 E4400 2.0 800 - $113 BTW, if you're in Syracuse any time soon you can have my copy of Harry Potter - it got sent to my old address. Geoffc
Actually I heard the drop was supposed to happen today (29th). I've been waiting to build 1 or 2 nodes with this price drop. They're also supposed to be releasing the Xeon 3.0 Quad core with this price drop, at ~$1200. But, the current Xeon 2.66 quad will drop to ~$750. That's an eight core cpu setup at 2.66ghz for $1500. Real nice.

RyanSpaulding
I'm not noticing much of a drop in any of the computer re-built systems yet...I'm waiting on that. I need a personal comp that can double as a workstation...but have a budget too.
kippu
What do you mean? the B3 stepping , the old ones , get heated up and cannot be overclocked much ...so its wiser to buy the G0 steppings , which are cooler and take less power ...

Geoffc
August 1st, no sign of this price drop. I really need to build a render node too...
AJLynn
The prices have dropped - or at least the ones that were supposed to. The Q6600 is going for ~$300 from a lot of vendors and the Q6700 is in the high $500 range. What happened was that prices from a lot of vendors dropped early in anticipation of the price drop (because sales were dropping in anticipation of the price drop) so there wasn't an overnight, 50% drop. Zdravko Barisic
Thanx man Here in Serbia Q6600 is about 250€? How about there? (pricaj stranjski da nas ne izbace sa foruma!)

I guess they are also holding off on the x5365 release for sometime in August. and, i just found the x5355 on pricewatch for ~$770. although i was considering going cheap with a qx6600 and oc'ing, im not an oc'er at all and might be much safer with a dual quad-xeon for a node. AJLynn
It's safer but a lot more expensive - expensive CPUs, expensive RAM, expensive motherboard - this, and how much easier it is to OC now, are why a lot of people are OC'ing now who didn't before they got Core2s. Visual Impact
what needs to be done as far as cooling to o'clock a q6600 from 2.4 - 3.0. Anyone had experience with this.
AJLynn
You can do this with air cooling but you'll want a better cooler than what they give you with the CPU. See the list here for some examples: http://anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/showdoc.aspx?i=3022&p=4 (lower numbers are better).

Its quite cheap for the power you get! But do you know abouth possiblities of clocking the thing? I read that people have manage to clocked it up to 3.2 Ghz... Then again I thought of getting Zalman 9700 for cooling! Vruće bre u pičku matrinu:p
Zdravko Barisic
^ You have to find "G0" stepping they have lower heat and higher OC possibilities, bit I do not know how to make differencies beetween old ones and the new "G0"s! Ovde je malo preladilo, "Od Svetog Ilije sunce sve milije"!
AJLynn
Actually, both versions (B3 and G0) are good overclockers and with a decent cooler, motherboard, RAM and power supply 3.2GHz should be easy. I've got a friend who has one at 3.6, on air cooling, and it's a B3. From what I've read, the G0 thing isn't as huge a deal as people are making of it - basically, Intel released the B3 (the original Q6600) with its power/thermal spec at 105W. Chips vary in exactly how much power they consume, but 105W would be a reliable maximum within a certain margin of error. As they got better at making it, the chips got more consistent and stayed more towards the lower end of the power consumption spectrum, so that after a while they were coming in at 100W, then 95W. At that point they were confident enough in it to change the spec which meant changing the stepping, but not the model number because it was really the same chip. (Having the same model number makes it really hard to get the one you want, BTW - I've been trying and you've either got to spend too much to get on a wait list and not get it for another 2 weeks or troll forums full of internet barbarians swapping tales of where they've got the G0 in between making fun of each others video cards. I gave up after a while and ordered from ncixus.com because it had the most G0 rumors.) So if you get a B3 that was made recently, it's as good as a G0 - the advantage of having a G0 is that you know if was made recently.
Zdravko Barisic
I understood, thank you. So, ALL th G0 should be at 95W power consuption? (and some of the B3 recently made)
AJLynn
Yes. To be precise, they should be within what Intel considers an acceptible margin of error of 95W under the testing conditions they use.
Geoffc
so is NCIXUS fairly reliable? I like their reviews and forum content. I also like that I won't have to pay any sales tax like I do with Newegg. The problem I have w/ oc'ing is that not only haven't I ever tried it, but I haven't closely followed the lasted in mobos, cpus and vid cards. Your line cracks me up: "troll forums full of internet barbarians swapping tales of where they've got the G0 in between making fun of each others video cards". I just haven't had the time to do that research. Probably end up just copying someone's exact setup and oc settings.
