Dave Buckley
Please give me info on where you think my lighting is good/bad, and also where and how to improve it. The scene is clearly not mine as you will have seen it used on a lot of forums as an example scene. But i have lit it myself in Mental Ray. The light setup is as follows: MR Area Spot as sunlight (default with raytraced shadows) Free area light outside the windows (parameters large enough to cover all the windows, intensity 80,000cd, raytraced shadows) Logarithmic exposure on (brightness 40, contrast 90, phys. scale 80,000) FG (medium preset with increased rays per point to 500) GI (default)
aaron-cds
There's a great thread over at vizdepot for this scene that was started by MR master Jeff Patton. http://www.vizdepot.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6795

aaron-cds
I think there is too much contrast in your image. The light areas are fine, but the dark areas are too dark.

pixelperfectg
IMHO, the lighting seems to falloff too quickly. With direct sunlight like that, I'd think the room would be a little bit brighter on the far right side. Perhaps setting the GI photon decay to 1.8 from the default 2.0 would help. Or if you decide to use FG only and no GI photons, increase the FG bounces a little (3 to 5 should be good)
Dave Buckley
the scene is fg only but with the bounces increased i seem to get quite a high level of colour bleeding from the orange, is there anyway to bump the bounces up while keeping the colour bleed low? pixelperfectg
There are a few methods discussed here: http://www.vizdepot.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6388

Ernest Burden III
where would i like to sit???? meaning . . . (elaborate please) Walk into that room--a class is about to start. Which seat would you sit in and what would you experience? You may have done a good job of creating dramatic lighting, but it may not serve the 'subject' well.
