BrianKitts
I just ordered a refurbished macbook pro. intel dualCore 2.3Ghz, 2G ram, 120G HD, 15" widescreen glossy screen, for 2,000 USD. Saved about $800 on it by buying it refurbished through the apple store. Processor and memory wise it's about the same as my current home system so I know it can handle a decent workload on its on. I plan on using distributive rendering to piggyback it with my home system and then I'll have it for traveling and giving presentations. I'm pretty psyched. the list changes daily but there's some good deals on them. I prefer to buy refurbished equipment when possible, not only for the price break, but also for the fact that they have to go through a stronger level of testing before being re-released into the world as opposed to a product that's brand new comes off the line with minimal testing and is just expected to work cause it's new. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=3929D548&node=home/specialdeals/mac
ihabkal
Hi Brian, Will that Macbook pro run windows xp pro 64 bits and 3dsmax/autocad? Thanks, Ihab
BrianKitts
windows xp pro w/ max and autocad = yes (requires bootcamp or parrallels) about the 64bit.... SOURCE (WIKI) --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Camp#64-bit_.28x64.29_Microsoft_Windows 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows While it is possible to install 64-bit (x64) Windows operating systems on Intel Macs with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, the Windows x64 OS encounters difficulties with full driver support in Boot Camp. The basic hardware used in most Intel Macs have drivers available for various OSes, including x64 versions of Microsoft Windows. However Apple specific hardware such as the built in iSight camera, Apple bluetooth, Apple track pad as well as software enhancements like Apple keyboard mapping and the screen brightness utility packaged with Boot Camp are written solely for x86 versions of Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista and thus they do not work in the x64 versions of Windows. AJLynn
Anyway, the Macbook Pro can't go over XP32's RAM limit, so unless you've got some really good reason to be using XP64 you're probably better off with 32.

Are you saying using X64 on a macbook pro won't give you the memory utilization that it will on a pc...
AJLynn
I'm saying that the best thing about XP64 is its ability to handle larger amounts of RAM than the MBP hardware currents supports.
manta
Ya, but for me its about no more crashes, I only have 2Gigs of Ram, but have my virtual ram set at 50gigs, so I never have memory crashes anymore, they are a thing of the past now...
AJLynn
Good point. In that case, I think you can get enough driver support with XP64 though you may need to use an external mouse and a USB wifi adapter. We've been waiting on a better bootcamp for a while, but they say it will come with OSX 10.5and that's been delayed because Apple put all the people they could on the iPhone leading up to its introduction. Macpod
the new dell vostro 1400 looks pretty damn good. 1440x900 screen, 2gb ram and 8400GS, 9 cell battery for less than the price of a macbook. if you were looking at something like the ASUS then this is a good alternative. certainly alot more powerful than the U5F it also has HDD shock protection, magnesium alloy frame and spill proof keyboard.... good solid notebook for a student. I prefer the plain black look over asus . seems to me asus just like to copy other peoples designs....they are starting to churn out these nasty looking HP-like wave etchings....good on dell for not following every trend
maguai
how do you install window on a macbook pro? is it easy? I would love a mac. but everything i own is a pc. I need a laptop bad.
AJLynn
You can install Windows using Bootcamp (a boot loader - see this article) or virtualization technology using Parallels or VMWare. Bootcamp is best if you want Windows running at full speed, virtualization is better for convenient use. You can also read up on the Apple forums here and here. Macpod
very easy, apple have a program called bootcamp which allows windows to be used. bootcamp run windows as fast as any windows machine with the same specs as the MBP. If you buy a new Mac now, bootcamp is included in the the OS.
vizfx
Hi For a new laptop I would choose the new Alienware Area 51 m9750 - hard to beat configurations. Another choice is an Ebay auction for refurbished Alienware with very good prices. Best regards. Mihai

AJLynn
Can they really put 2 x 320GB drives in a laptop ??? If the notebook is big enough, heavy enough and with low enough expectations of battery life, it can have anything you want in it. These aren't really meant to be used in the way most people use notebooks. They're meant for people whose idea of a party is half a dozen guys and a gigabit network. You can take one of these "notebook" PCs with you instead of carrying your desktop computer and monitor using backpack-style straps. (I'm not making that up - people do do that.) For most people, the Apple notebook will be better.
