RyanSpaulding
Man, I'm so out of the loop on this stuff now. How does the AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 5000+ compare to Intel's Dual Core machines? There seems to be a significant price difference in machines built with them. Is it for good reason?
AJLynn
Have a look here: http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3038&p=
RyanSpaulding
So in a nutshell, Intel Dual Core > AMD's it looks like.
AJLynn
Yeah. Maybe AMD makes a comback with its new line, but Intel will have an update around the same, so who knows. On the upside, for AMD, they've got competitive products at the lower end - a couple of dual cores that use very low power and cost under $100. Check out the price/performance index for the two chips and you'll see why... http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=871&model2=921&chart=

RyanSpaulding
AMD price points are so niiiiice tho...I wonder if bang for the buck, AMD's stuff is still ok.
Ernest Burden III
When we first started hearing about the Win 64bit OS, I recall reading that the AMD chips handled legacy/32bit code better than Intel's. Is that still true (if it ever was)? I may need a new workstation soon, and don't know whether to lean AMD or Intel. I'm not going to build anything myself, so its probably a Boxx, HP or Apple dualboot.
AJLynn
They were comparing AMD's Athlon64 to the Merced prototypes (which became Itanium) at the time, and Merced was basically a pure 64-bit chip that could handle 32-bit in emulation. The current consumer 64's aren't on that level, they're 32-bit chips with 64-bit addons, so they're very good at 32-bit processing.
Ernest Burden III
So what's my next move, brother?
AJLynn
Look at these numbers - the FX74 and all the Intel chips beginning with Q are quads, but those are all for single sockt motherboards and if you're looking at Boxx you're probably looking at dual socket? I don't know if Boxx sells a dual-quad AMD but you could ask; I know they sell dual-quad Intel, so maybe AMD isn't even close but if you're comparing same GHz, same cores, in C4D rendering, AMD is sort of close. I just got a Q6600 and it kickeed some Cinebench ass. I'll have more to say about my (positive) experience next week but for the next few days I'm out of the country. manta
Unless I missed something, AMD doesn't have a quad chip yet, so the best they can do right now is a dual dual setup...
