Brian Cassil
So I just finished ordering all the stuff for my computer (much thanks to everyone who helped with advice on that) and now I find this: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bdcwyfz&s=bsd Switch to the Q6600 proc, forward to the monitor section and remove the monitor and you get a quad core computer with OK stuff for $600 and free shipping. $600!!! I'm not hating because I just spent a little over $2000 on a computer which at a distance has somewhat similar stats, but I'm so tempted to get one of these dells and use it as a render node. F J
hmmm, they do love selling those B3 steppings like hot cakes.. they dont have any Raptors in there thats for sure.. also im sure that price does not include a 8800 series graphic card? lol the RAM is actually below 800MHz.. *shakes head* i would love to see what kind of motherboard its got.. (hmm, on second thought, no i wouldnt ) that is none but a box made out of cheap parts.. this is y i always assemble a box from scratch, often getting different parts from different stores.. that way u always know what u'r actually getting.. my couple cents.. Geoffc
Make sure that if you're going Win64 on your main computer that you just ordered, you get Win64 render nodes if you use vray. Otherwise you have to go with Max 32 on your main pc with DR in vray, to work with the other nodes with Max32. A minor but annoying issue, especially if you need lots of ram for your scenes. Supposedly the next vray release will fix this.

Brian Cassil
OK, so I've ruled out getting this, but I did think it was interesting to see a retail quad core computer for this price. How do they make money on something like this? Anyway, what I'm going to do is try to build my first computer on a really, REALLY tight budget and see what sort of damage I can do. I'll start another thread outlining that.
