Mental Ray - Interior Glass

I have been working with Mentalray Max v9 and cannot get my interior glass to be transparent on certain areas. For instance - I have 9' tall glass walls that hide the top part of my ceilin grid - yet it shows everything else. I am fairly new to MR - but have been using max for my furniture renderings since version 1.0 - Any help would be a bonus. I am uploading the file for reference. -THANKS!!

this is a strange one

 

there seemed to be a hell of a lot of glass panes or sumthin where each bit of interior glass was. 'Glass edge' i believe they were called, i managed to get the white ceiling back but not the grid for some strange reason. If you look at the render i have included then you'l see the ceiling but no grid, i have made no changed other than deleting all the glass edges, and applyin the arch and design thin glass material to the remaining glass. I then put the refraction colour to a clear white, all i can think is that it had something to do with the amount of refraction taking place before i deleted the glass edges. you'l just have to keep playin to take it further from here, coz thats as far as i can take you i'm afraid, the rest has stumped me

 

one tip i will give is to lower the intensity of the lights in each room, perhaps use photometric lights to physical accuracy, as you can see the glare on the celing from your omni's is far too bright, lower the intensity and increase the bounces on the final gather, this should reduce glare but maintain light levels (amount) in the room

 

rite i've had a bit more of a play, and it appears theres a few problems with the geometry, i can't seem to be able to select the object with grid on it, also when i unhid everything there a loads of hidden object, one of which is labelled quad patch which i think may be having an issue to the ceiling, attached is another render showing a plane jus below the gemotry that is carrying the grid material, as you can see, no part of the plane is hidden

 

so if i was you i'd just go through and check the geometry before you start blamin the materials : p

 

you'l probably find that the glass you had in the first place would have been fine, maybe even the glass edges i spoke about, but thats for you to experiment with, keep you entertained for a bit. Jus check the roof itself, i think you'l find that its that causing the problem

 

hope this helps, oh and just out of interest, how have you created the geometry, has it been imported from autocad plans???

David - thanks for the reply. the "floorplan" was imported from Autocad. the rest of the geometry I created. the ceiling grid is something that I built. I can't figure out why the glass keeps hiding it from final render. Thanks for your input - I really appreciate the reply.

Hi rich,

The problem is not with the materials, but the cieling properties. I checked the properties of "cieling arch" and noticed that "visible to reflection/refraction", as well as "cast shadows" and "recieve shadows" were not checked. I suspect the objects behind the glass were not being rendered because they were either a reflection or refraction either in front of or behind the glass. I thinkg if you check the "visible to reflection/refraction" box you will be back on the right track. Good luck.
