tecton3d
hey all, I'm having issues with Illustrator CS2 not saving a file that i'm working on. It's a 640mb file of 20 - 11x17in pages (a mini portfolio of my academic work) that includes .eps files exported from Autocad, and scanned hand drawings, as well as rendered images and page layouts generated in Illustrator itself that are "placed" instead of "pasted". I have a robust machine and therefore am not running out of ram it's just when I go to save i get the error: ... what gives... is there a way to work around this? thanks & proust! Matt McDonald
why are you keeping twenty 11x17 "pages" in a single document? The idea of 20 AI files might not be appealing but I would think that it would be a lot less messy and a lot less error prone.
tecton3d
it was actually to make things less messy... plus Illustrator "feels" like a better program than Indesign but either way, I need to print to a .pdf in the end and if I already have the illustrator files seperate, i might as well just use indesign for the construction of the book (i.e. - assembling all the individual pages into one document/book. BrianKitts
are you embedding the 20 images? you can link them in instead and your file won't be so massive.

Crazy Homeless Guy
..for starters, InDesign and Illustrator are both great apps, but they both serve different areas of the market. Illustrator is an Illustration program, that is not designed to do multiple pages. Indesign is a layout program that can do books that are several hundred pages in length. It happens to include a few basic illustration tools. Now, I am guessing the solution to your problem lies in Brian's answer. When you 'place' a page, make sure you check the box that says 'link'. This keeps the file from embedding in the page, and only places a reference of the file on your page. If you do this, I am guessing your file size will go from 650 megs to about 5 megs. Although I would still not bet the bank on it working flawlessly. A proper way to do this would be to use a combination of Illustrator and InDesign. They are set up to work as a compliment of each other. You can link Illustrator files directly into InDesign.

You'll only spend five minutes setting up your InDesign doc. (linking in the 20 AI files). Then output (printer or PDF) will be much, much easier. + InDesign is pretty sweet
