Billabong
This is an interior shot of the BGW building I saw in the New Work Spaces book. I loved how it looked, so I though I would give it shot. Its very early in the project but I was really pleased on the outcome of the stairs, so I wanted to show it. The hardest part was getting the small rails on the on the spiral to line up with the ones on each floor. Hope you like it so far
salf
its going on really nice! Im actually having problem with a spiral stair myself, but my railings arent "tubes", Im guessing you just loft s circle along a 3d spline, or even just a spline with thickness will do it, but my railings are curved glass panels, and I cant get that shape. innerdream
Very nice! It's good to see that spiral stairs no matter if they are CG or physical models are a pain in the butt. PS, I built a spiral stair model for a very important client once ( a physical model) and built the stairs going down in the wrong direction...doh! It took weeks to build and only about two seconds for the designer to catch the mistake.
Tommy L
In my final project in my final year at the final exhibition, I realized Id forgotten to put stairs to the top (6th floor) altogether! Amazingly, no-one noticed and I got a way with it. That mistake would have cost me another year at university..

Billabong
Thanks guy for all the comments, and yeah this thing was a pain in the butt, but i think its coming together nicely, heres a very small update
innerdream
Outstanding job! What did you use to build it?
Billabong
I built the first step, then I arrayed it only once on the rotation and on the Y axis to make sure I got evenly spaced, then I just arrayed it all the way down. The rails are helix's made editble, so I could connect them to the rails on each of the floors. All work was done in Max 9 and rendered with Vray. I still got a ways to go, and thanks for the compliment
innerdream
I don't have Max, though I've done the demo. How do you space the helix rails?
Billabong
I make the first helix, and then shift drag it to duplicate it and instead of only choosing one make it instance itself 4 times and they space themselves evenly automatically

Or is it all eyeball?
Billabong
everything i have done so far has been eyeball
innerdream
everything i have done so far has been eyeball YIKES! I couldn't work that way..I need to know it's in scale.
Tommy L
Are you working from photographs?
Billabong
Yes they are from the New Work spaces book here is the pic I am using, the scale in the open space is a little more narrow than what I have, but I wanted it to be a little moe open that what it really is
salf
I just learnt that theres a Spiral STair tool in MAx 9....you can pretty much do any type of spiral stairs with it, you should try it.....although seems that you got it done already.
Billabong
Yeah I'm not a big fan of that tool, you can't bevel your edges, the array tool, IMO, works way better
Billabong
Well i was practicing some lighting, and was not liking my outcomes, so I decided maybe the best way to get it, would be to model the out side of the building as well, since a lot of it is glass anyway, but this is what i have so far
Billabong
I Haven't touched this on in while , so last week i thought i would try to give it some textures and see what kind of renders I could get out of it. I feel like it's missing something and I also need to work on my hotspots. but I wanted to see what you guys think so far Thanks for looking -B
Nic H
looking pretty good there, all the modelled detail really helps it. i reckon you should do a alternate lighting scheme with more dramatic light or a night version seeing as though its such a nice model. Claudio Branch
Hey Brandon...good stuff so far. You are doing a knock out job as usual. Don't like the AEC Stair tools though? I've really never had too much problem with them. They usually get me about 75%-80% along before I collapse it all down to Editable Poly. I've done it your way too!
