The Trickster
Hey all, Im trying to get a nice caustic effect in this scene but have so far failed, can anyone offer any advice or maybe point me in the way of a decent tut??? Cheers all, http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/3834/poolxc7.jpg
STRAT
personally, i'd fake them using a good caustics map or using the caustics stand alone generator. i did this image a couple years back with faked caustics for Maxon's gallery - http://www.maxon.net/pages/images/customerstories/architecture/vernissage_03/leworthy_hospital.jpg doesn't look as realistic as real generated caustics, but gives a staisfying stylistic alternative that renders 100x faster. (could be made to look realer too with more tweeking)
alfienoakes
Crazy water Trickster.. Looks like a primeval soup..! I agree with Strat.. also I think you image is a really nice bright day, flooded with sunlight.. Would caustics really make a huge difference?.. If the room was darker, with lighting in the pool, maybe.. But for the amount of caustics you are gonna see in your scene, and the hassle........ The Trickster
Cheers lads, You know what your right, this needs to be a night scene then i can get some lights in the pool! Nice image Strat i like it. (very moody). Whats wrong with my water andy?? Maybe i need to see a doctor about it!
STRAT
Andy is correct. take a look at some real pool water. yours is too large and swelled/wavey. too refractive. almost has the consistance of a thick goo. water is less viscous than that. also, your water contains absolutely no surface detail; no ripple/ripplets or subtle reflections etc. you certainly could put in caustics, but the scene is so brightly lit and the room is so small the render wouldn't benefit from them. (i'd also address that large tiling material on the l/h wall too)
The Trickster
yes, im aware of the tiling and will correct it. Right, one shall improve said water before attempting any night shot! Any suggestions to the modifier? I used Noise but maybe wave or ripple would work better? Ive not done much water in the past apart from a canal which i just made as flat as a mill pond!! Conor Clancy
The problem with the water is the refraction is messing with my brain. I feel dizzy after looking at your image... ...gibber...
