Devin Johnston
Yes you'd think it would be simple but this has been going on since version 5 and there has been absolutely no progress on it. Since you’re talking with them why don't you ask them about it and see what they say. I'm very curious if they recognize or will even admit there is a problem. anthony cortez
I'd like to chime in here, We've been using Vue for a couple of years now, I can tell you that it has been quite a struggle working with the program, but I feel like I couldn't just abandon it because of it's image quality, and the fact that I can say that I can render Billions of polygons in one scene We use now use it with Max 64bit, Mental Ray 3.5 & Vue6 XStream 64 bit. Though there are still are crashing issues, I haven't recieved any out of memory errors like I would when working on 32 bit. I've really learned just to keep saving my files incrementally and regularly. I spoke to E-on at Siggraph and they acknowledged that there are issues with the software, but keeps updating builds regularly to solve some of the issues that I've had. There are still some issues with lights synching, but the cameras do synch properly. You just have to manually save out a synchonization file in Max Utilities, and then import that file into Vue. Scaling issues I've had in Vue5 are now gone in Vue6. I'm currently working on a 3 mile Bridge and it's surrounding terrain from DEM data and everything seems to import properly. There are several workflow tips on the Vue Forum on CGTalk.com. There are stil some backburner issues I'm dealing with concerning complex scenes, but as for simple scene files, it works just fine. My friend Kim Lee, had done a couple of Chase commercials using Max/Vue/Combustion. Granteed there was alot of compositing, he also had to buy a bunch of rendercow nodes and waited a week for it to render, but at the end it really looked beautiful. After my project is over, I plan to put together a complete writeup about my workflow dealing with Max/Mental Ray/Vue6 XStream. In the meantime, I would suggest to download the PLE and have a go with it. Here's some stills I've done using Vue... http://www.3d-mg.com/flash/worx/Vue5I_Before_After2.jpg http://www.3d-mg.com/flash/worx/P38Attack.jpg Good luck! daniohayon
Vue Infinite is what I've got and it $735 US, I'd say if you use alot of HDRI's or need good background sky's it's worth the price and with it you get all of the other stuff to. Thanks Maxer
Devin Johnston
Anthony, I'm glad that you've been able to use Vue and I'd be very interested in reading what you have to say about your workflow. You say the scale issue has been solved; does that mean that you can export a Max scene with a camera and have it come into Vue exactly where it's supposed to? Did you ask Eon if they planned on supporting anything other than Mental Ray?
Nils Norgren
Anthony, your stills are very nice, you mentioned saving out a Camera Sync vile (.dat) via Max utilities, I am unable to find this feature. I am evaluating the software via the PLE. Thanks -Nils
Nils Norgren
Never mind the above post, I discussed the problem with someone here who has used Vue, and found out that the PLE doesn't include the VueSync utility that makes the .dat files for syncing objects and cameras between the two programs. -N
anthony cortez
Maxer: About the scaling issue...for some reason (maybe because the program was designed in France?) , you need to set your display units in Metric before exporting out of Max. Use the .3ds format as it will bring in the same UVs. When you import into Vue, leave all the import options disabled (center obects, rescale objects, decimate objects) Recheck the placement by exporting your object back into max to see if it originally lines up. You should be good to go. I didn't ask them if any renderer other than Mental Ray will be supported. IMHO, they have enough bugs on their plate to fix first. But who knows, maybe v7? Nils: I'm not sure if the PLE supports the Vuesynch features. See if you can download (SynchroPlugins_Vue6.zip) off their site, once you copy the files into your max plugins directory, you should be able to get the Synchro tools in your Utilities Panel. anthony cortez
There's now a Max to Vue Exporter plugin that can be downloaded off the e-on site. I haven't tested it out yet, but it's suppose to export your max files to a .vob file format.
Devin Johnston
I'll try out the new plugin and see if I get better results, I hope so! By the way that animation really looks good I'd love to see the final version, what render engine are you going to use?
Devin Johnston
I've looked on their site and can't find anything about a new export plugin for Max.
jinsley
Seems that you have to be a registered user to access the plug-in... http://www.e-onsoftware.com/products/vue/vue_5_infinite/?page=
Devin Johnston
I've downloaded the newest version for Max 9 and Vue 6.5 and not surprisingly it still doesn’t work. I can export a 3Ds of my model and get it into Vue but I still can't export the camera using the Vue Synch plugin. I honestly can't believe that they can't fix this problem; I mean what reason could there be that they have missed this issue for the last few years? It really ticks me off that I wasted my time trying to make it work again.
mikedeerf
Devin, Thanks for giving it a shot. I was tempted to try too, given Anthony's experiences, but was afraid to waste even more time on it. Glad you took that risk; sorry to hear it didn't work out.
anthony cortez
Sorry, I feel you frustration with Vue. If you want, send over the file that you're working on, it doesn't have to be the complete file, just some objects and the cameras. I'll take a look and see if it works over here.
