VUE 6 - Personal Learning Edition

I'd like to chime in here,

We've been using Vue for a couple of years now, I can tell you that it has been quite a struggle working with the program, but I feel like I couldn't just abandon it because of it's image quality, and the fact that I can say that I can render Billions of polygons in one scene :) We use now use it with Max 64bit, Mental Ray 3.5 & Vue6 XStream 64 bit. Though there are still are crashing issues, I haven't recieved any out of memory errors like I would when working on 32 bit. I've really learned just to keep saving my files incrementally and regularly. I spoke to E-on at Siggraph and they acknowledged that there are issues with the software, but keeps updating builds regularly to solve some of the issues that I've had. There are still some issues with lights synching, but the cameras do synch properly. You just have to manually save out a synchonization file in Max Utilities, and then import that file into Vue. Scaling issues I've had in Vue5 are now gone in Vue6. I'm currently working on a 3 mile Bridge and it's surrounding terrain from DEM data and everything seems to import properly. There are several workflow tips on the Vue Forum on CGTalk.com.

There are stil some backburner issues I'm dealing with concerning complex scenes, but as for simple scene files, it works just fine. My friend Kim Lee, had done a couple of Chase commercials using Max/Vue/Combustion. Granteed there was alot of compositing, he also had to buy a bunch of rendercow nodes and waited a week for it to render, but at the end it really looked beautiful. After my project is over, I plan to put together a complete writeup about my workflow dealing with Max/Mental Ray/Vue6 XStream. In the meantime, I would suggest to download the PLE and have a go with it.

Here's some stills I've done using Vue...

Good luck!

Anthony, I'm glad that you've been able to use Vue and I'd be very interested in reading what you have to say about your workflow. You say the scale issue has been solved; does that mean that you can export a Max scene with a camera and have it come into Vue exactly where it's supposed to? Did you ask Eon if they planned on supporting anything other than Mental Ray?

Maxer: About the scaling issue...for some reason (maybe because the program was designed in France?) , you need to set your display units in Metric before exporting out of Max. Use the .3ds format as it will bring in the same UVs. When you import into Vue, leave all the import options disabled (center obects, rescale objects, decimate objects)

Recheck the placement by exporting your object back into max to see if it originally lines up. You should be good to go.

I didn't ask them if any renderer other than Mental Ray will be supported. IMHO, they have enough bugs on their plate to fix first. But who knows, maybe v7?

Nils: I'm not sure if the PLE supports the Vuesynch features. See if you can download (SynchroPlugins_Vue6.zip) off their site, once you copy the files into your max plugins directory, you should be able to get the Synchro tools in your Utilities Panel.

I've downloaded the newest version for Max 9 and Vue 6.5 and not surprisingly it still doesn’t work. I can export a 3Ds of my model and get it into Vue but I still can't export the camera using the Vue Synch plugin. I honestly can't believe that they can't fix this problem; I mean what reason could there be that they have missed this issue for the last few years? It really ticks me off that I wasted my time trying to make it work again.
