FlipStick3
I'm still very knew to this, so.. Im trying to make a floor lamp. You know, the ones that are set into the ground and you can walk over, cause there is acrylic or some sort of plastic covering it..? well, i am not sure what sort of light to use and i want the light to shine up from the floor, but whatever i try, when i put the light i use into the ground(there is a hole like there would be in real life) there is just no light coming from it. Also, could someone please explain all the different lights and GI and radiosity please ? Thats if your not too busy, if you just can't be ars*d then can you gimme a link to a tutorial or something. Thanks alot !

@lkion O
Hello FLip, maybe you can achieve the result by creating a self illuminated material and adding an omni light on top of it or add a light effect...As for the rest try the tutorials which can be found in the help section of viz. Also a google search will provide you with several tutorials. A good start is www.tutorialfind.com Cya Umm.. and what software would one be using? That should get the sphere rolling... I thought this is a viz forum

@lkion O
Flip hello again! if understood right maybe the loft command will help you. Draw a spiral and then draw a circle which will use that spiral as path. See the help section of the software on how to use lofts. But ...£"%$ now that i thought about it why not use the spiral? Eric
In regards to the floor-lite not allowing light to pass through it, I'd do one of two things. 1) Put the acrylic cover in the "Exclude" list in your floor light's Modify Properties, which will allow the light to pass through the acrylic. 2) Right click on the acrylic cover and edit the properties for the acrylic. Turn off Cast Shadows, which will allow light to pass through it. 3) Change the Material for the acrylic to a "Translucent Shader", which is as far as I know the only material shader that will allow light to pass through it. 4) If you're using radiosity, you can add a Radiosity Override to the material type (instead of "Standard" or whatever else it might be currently) and "Keep Existing..." if you want to keep your current material setting, otherwise don't keep the existing settings and start from scratch with the new "Radiosity Override" material. Simly increase the "Illuminance Scale" in the Radiosity Override Materials - Special Effects box. Default is 0 (no illumination). If you drop in a Photometric Point light, you'll notice its default illumination is 1500 cd. As a reference to a starting point setting for you Luminance Scale, enter 1500 cd. Using this method will not give you a spot light that you're looking for, but it's still one method you could use. 5) If you're using radiosity, you could go to www.erco.com, click on Download (at the top), then click on Autodesk i-Drop, then Start Autodesk i-drop, you can download a Standard Downlight by simply dragging the image into your VIZ session. Rotate the light 180 degrees so it's facing up, rather than down, and make sure it's just a fraction above your floor, and run your radiosity solution. You don't even have to cut a hole in the floor for this method. 6) There is more than one way to skin a cat, and more than one way to do what you're doing. I'm sure someone else will have more insight. Hope this helps.
