Brian Smith
I said it in foresight! You started this thread in August to declare HDDVD the winner (and it wasn't the first of these threads) and I disagreed. I was right and now I'm gloating. You're right, I'll give you that one. I was disagreeing on both the timing of the endgame and the possibility of Toshiba winning. I didn't think it would end this quickly. I actually got a $99 HDDVD player on the assumption the a Blu Ray player back in the fall would cost more than $99 plus the price of a Blu Ray player after the format war ended. I don't have much time until my HDDVD player becomes obsolete so I might be out the $99. well it makes for a great upscaling dvd player. as long as dvds are around, it's technically not obsolete. AJLynn
Yeah, there's always that, goes well with my 1080i set and has excellent picture quality for DVDs. To get the same from a DVD player wouldn't cost much less than the $99.
Brian Cassil
Personally I found the war kind of amusing because I'm not sure that there are that many people who care enough about 1080p (or even know what that means) to go to the effort and expense of a new TV, player, and media library, each at 2-3 times the cost of SD. Obviously, those of us here care about it, but I've tried having this discussion with my neighbors some of who have bought new HD tv's and they just don't see the need to replace their library with blu-ray discs or even to start buying them for the new stuff. In fact one of my neighbors bought an up-convert dvd player thinking that it was an HD-DVD player. When he saw the difference on his TV he figured anything better than that was just not that important to him. He has no plans to get blu-ray at all. I'm just wondering if Sony has gone to war and dumped a ton of money into something that will never really pay off for them.
