Aaron2004
Hello, This is my first time working with IES lights. The lighting in the scene is fairly good except for me not understanding IES lights. I am using VRAY sun/sky. And the IES lights are in the porch. How do I get rid of the defined edge caused by the can lights in the porch? I know that it is in part due to the fact that the light is in the can...but I'm pretty sure real-world lights don't act quite this hard. Also, the IES lights are causing splotches on the driveway. This is with QMC and an IR map of 'Medium'. (As I increase the IR map, the splotches only get more defined, btw) Thanks! Aaron
Aaron2004
When I cut back on the shadow density, it fixes the edge problem, but it only increases the splotchiness... The can/ceiling that it is in has a reflection to it...I think that is causing the problem...but I don't know how to fix it.
Aaron2004
Yep...I know. However, the client wants the porch to be a lot brighter, so I figure that would use the lights. That argument aside though, what is causing this...because I've had it happen before (The splotchyness).
Aaron2004
Nope...but there are a lot of glossy/reflective objects around the porch area. But, right, the light is not behind glass.
aaron-cds
Aaron, Get rid of the ies lights. Unless you care about getting a complex light scallop on the wall you don't need them. Use a spot light set to 5 degree hot spot / 120 degree falloff, with inverse square decay set to 5 feet. You'll have to boost the intensity if you're using the physical camera and sun. I rendered my scene using the lele .255 method. The spot light intensity has a 100 multiplier.
Koper
move the lights a bit out of the containing 'cans' and rotate them towards the wall a bit so that the edge actually comes back up a bit. ok, this will be a dumb question, did you put the shadow param to use vray shadows? you can also just exclude that which don't show the ies light streaks from the photometric lights so that it don't gets influenced by it. how much gi does your wall material/object generate? Aaron2004
Thanks for the help, guys...yes I am using VRAY shadows. All of my GI settings are set to the default '1' in the VRAY properties dialog. I'm going to try the spot light...
Koper
also you can always put a circular gradient map in the projector slot of a target spot light to get the streaks effect, something that realy works a charm, and will complement aaron-cds's method
Aaron2004
Well, Aaron's spotlight method works great...and I"m going to try Koper's method soon...but what caused those splotches? Thanks a lot, guys! Aaron
Koper
just put the circular gradient map in aarons spotlight, and use 2 or more gradient ramps, each gradient ramp is a streak

Thanks a lot, guys! Aaron Do a search for vray splotches here and at the chaosgroup forum. It's a problem that is easily fixed.
