very first "project" - lighting exterior scene

hi. i have an exterior project for my brother-in-law (seemed like a good place to start). to show him updates as i've modeled the different buildings, i've always rendered still images using the default scanline render (3ds max9) and a skylight with light-tracer turned on. i really like the results. i've been exploring other options such as mr sun and mr sky. things seem generally flat etc. i've read up on logarithmic exposure control etc, and have gotten what i think are decent results. however, it seems to just lack that light-tracer/skylight quality.

the main thing i like about it is that you get little shadows everywhere to define the shapes of the buildings etc.

so my question is, should i just use the light-tracer/skylight and try to come up with a decent background (sky like, clouds etc)? or, is there some way to create that same look and feel with other lights like the mr sun and mr sky? (if there is, apparently i haven't read enough :) )

thanks in advance

steve

Well normally I would deter you from MR, but since you're using Max 9, it comes with the new and improved MR, so I think its worth learning, with that said, why don't you post a couple examples of the same scene rendered with MR and another with Light tracer, and then we can help you to achieve the same results with MR or even better...Are you using FG or GI with MR ?

here's a couple of examples. i was using the "draft" mode for the MR version. on the light-tracer, for example, you can see neat little shadows that define the inset of the bricks in the left/right columns of the entrance to the building near center frame.

and oh, i'm using standard materials not the special MR materials. i'm humbled to post these compared to what i've seen on these forums! i hope nobody throws-up! :D
