better with digital or analog on new LCD?

I just got a new workstation, and will use my Sony CRT with it. I had to get a new monitor to use with the old workstation. I bought a nice LG 22" LCD (5000:1 contrast and 2ms refresh time). The old Quadro 750 has both an analog VGA output and a digital DVI output, the LG has a VGA cable and a port for DVI input. I think one of ten boxes I got today from FedEx and UPS has a DVI cable in it.

 

Would I get a better picture using the analog or digital, since both are available?

Digital. Hands down. (Analog on LCDs looks fuzzy and "crawly")

OK, located the box with the digital cable.

 

Wrong cable.

 

Analog it is, for now.

 

 

 

Hum... the cable I have has the correct terminator at the graphics card end--a standard DVI male. The other end has a rather small, flat connector with contacts on the inside. The LG monitor has a port that looks like the DVI, but a little smaller--a few rows of square openings (female).

 

I seem to have bought the wrong digital cable. Pity, its gold-plated.

 

It's working well enough in analog, I'm using it now.

Yeah, pretty huge difference between the analog and digital. You'll see once you get it hooked up.

Is the incorrect cable a DVI to HDMI? HDMI is the sam sort of connector as USB or Firewire but more robust, and it's mostly useful for connecting to HDTVs - so if you have a 1080P HDTV and want to hook up a computer, a DVI to HDMI would give you better quality than a VGA cable.

I think so. But the port on the monitor is a DVI port.

Now I'm stumped once again. I got the right cable, there was one sitting in my big box of cables, connectors and other PC attachments.

 

Once connected, the digital hasn't worked. When I connect it (with monitor off) and turn the LCD back on it says 'digital sleep mode' or something like that and stays black. I have played with the input mode button on the LCD, looked at the monitor settings in the display control panel on the PC, but don't see anything that would control the digital port on the Quadro 750.

 

Any ideas?

I used to use a Quadro 900 - same generation - and it worked with DVI without any changes. Can you use the VGA cable to get into the display settings then see if there's anything to change in there to get the DVI port to work? Or, actually, have you tried it starting with both the computer and monitor powered off, then turning on the monitor then the computer? I've had issues before with DVI not coming up when you attach a cable with the computer on...
