Ernest Burden III
I finally got the right OS on my new workstation. It was sent with XP, buts its a dual 64bit CPU plus 8GB RAM. I needed XP-64. I got a new install disc and got it installed today. Boxx provided the necessary drivers for the disk controller, sound, etc., but I went looking for a few more for existing devices I will use with the new machine, and am coming up empty. You cannot use a regular XP driver under XP-64? What happens if you install one? So far this is just my Sony CRT monitor without a new driver. It functions, but is just listed as Plug and Play device. Am I stuck with that?
Chad Warner
We have an 11x17 laser printer here that we can't use with xp64 because there are no drivers, and no plans to create any. We tried the xp drivers, but they do not work.
AJLynn
I've been able to use everything except an old TV tuner card. You do need to find new drivers but most companies have written them. What don't you have?

It's also the first device Boxx didn't provide that I've looked for a driver for.
AJLynn
That's a tought one, since it's discontinued and they don't place much priority on monitor drivers. I cant find one.
Ernest Burden III
I cant find one. Me, either. But thank you for looking. I also checked the standard list within Windows, lots of similar model numbers but not this one. The monitor works at least, and I can still use the color temperature profile Sony provided. Similar question would be: If we see a Vista64 driver for a device, can we use it with XP-64?
AJLynn
I've seen it go both ways - a device having one driver that's for XP64 and Vista64, or two different drivers.

OK, but if I see a Vista64 driver (only) should I assume I cannot use it with XP-64?
AJLynn
You can try it. If it doesn't work, use Device Manager to roll back the driver to a default monitor or something similar. (One thing you can try if the Vista driver doesn't work - all Trinitron monitors are at least in part made by Sony, so you might find another manufacturer's monitor that has the same tube and specs and a XP64 driver.) You really do not need at all any driver for CRT screen, but sad true about other devices, that newer drivers for XP x64 will not come out! Simply, for Vista x64 there will be, but for XP x64 there will be not. XP x64 will stay in use in a very very small group of people and no one has some interest in writing the driver for 0.00000000000001% of PC users. Also, big companies use UNIX/Linux so thats another reason why XP x64 is "unofficially discountinued". If you look at the drivers, most all of them are from 2005 some from 2006 and very rarely from 2007. Only nVidia/ATI wite new ones, but other do not. Matt McDonald
You cannot use a regular XP driver under XP-64? What happens if you install one? On our 64bit machines the 32bit drivers wouldn't install. We did have someone attempt to install a 32bit driver for a Wacom pad (a 64bit driver is available). The install ran and told him to reboot. Once he did the machine would crash prior to fully starting. The fix was (I believe) that the IS guys booted it into safe mode and were able to remove the driver.
