Dave Buckley
i have attached a few images, and was wondering what the usual method would be of achieving the same light effects, would i light the scene as per usual and then add the IES lights, or is it a totally different approach to lighting an interior with IES lights etc, how would you guys create the lighting in these pictures, surely the ies lights would not create such bright evenly lit light across the entire room, as i believe IES lights are more of a 'focused' light. So in the imags where it is daylight and we still see the IES's then how would this be done? i am comfortable lighting an interior but have only just started to play with IES files such as ERCO and SIMES etc, surely you can't just place the IES lights in the scene where they should go and VOILA, there must be something else going on? (SKYLIGHT, SUNLIGHT maybe?)
mesht
the first 2 images is a combination of daylight and artificial lights, could be IES lights too. In order to achieve such mood or brightness, you have to combine daylighting and artificial lighting, with the sunlight creating the overall illuminance and the artificial lights to add additional illumination to the interior however, u have to decide how you would want to illuminate your interior, is it purely by artificial lights? or a combination of both daylight and artificial lights? if you illuminate just by using artificial lights, be it ERCO or SIMES, the resulting brightness is not as bright as compared to using daylight. of course, u have to set the exposure control too and if you are using Mental ray to render, you have to take note of the intensity of your artificial lights, eg, in a night scene, if you just drag n drop an IES light into your scene, the scene would lit up correctly with the required nos of lights in, according to the IES data that is stored in the lights.BUT, if you drag n drop the same IES light into your scene with a sunlight activated, you will not see your IES lights illuminating the areas supposedly to be lit, because the stored intensity value is too low for the daylight. i've tried using both IES lights and sunlight together, and found out the IES did not illuminate the areas supposedly to be illuminated, until i increased the IES intensity value by 33 times it's original value. i hope my explanations helps

If you say to increase the intensity value by 33 times, then how accurate is the light going to be?
ovzoc
If you want to see how ies light interacts with sun then you can only approach a result.. The best method is to take spherical panoramic image of your entire environment and then turn it to hdr and apply as environment... Then you must study the sun at the present moment and try to immitate it.. Then you can say that you will have a scene that interacts well with ies lights and physical light (with accuracy)
