I've messed around with it mainly to compare it to Maxwell and so far I'm not overly impressed with it. I wouldn’t say it's any better than Maxwell or faster for that matter, it's definitely not any easier to use in fact it seems to be more complex especially in the material area. Has anyone else using Maxwell messed around with Fry?

Hi Devin,

you guess i'm paticularly biased on this subject, but the following Fry's features that MWL DOES NOT have simply justify my choice :

- Features that all work :D

- Physical sky working and complete (24h)

- Aeronoise

- Exit Portal

- Displacement

- Instancing

- Complete tonemapping

- Single sheet scattering

- A very responsive tech team

- a constant development

If you find things difficult to manage in Fry, don't hrsitate to ask ;)

Best regards

Yeah, the material complexity - could be that extra micropoly displacement feature and the single-sheet sub-surface scattering.that's throwing you for a loop. :D

I "messed around" with Maxwell but could never use it in production. I've used fryrender for all of my productions for nearly a year now. That's with access to only 3 machines (my license supports 10). Maxwell and Vray are gathering dust on the shelf.

So far I've had exactly the opposite experience but I only spent a few hours playing around with it. Actually I'm just not that excited about learning yet another piece of software. I'm still waiting for someone who is an expert in both Fry and Maxwell to give a honest head to head comparison of the two. I want to know which one is faster and by how much, there's no doubt that Fry has more features than Maxwell but IMO the image quality still isn't there. I know that's totally subjective and I'm biased anyway but that's my perspective.

Devin, even if the results were indisputably equal, that fryrender turned out to be every bit as good as Maxwell (which is less than their goal), you already have 2043950948 seats of Maxwell. Go with it. Make it work.

I've got no problem using Maxwell, it's only getting better at this point but can't ignore the possibility that something better might be out there. Maybe I'll give Fry another chance when things slow down and I've got time to really explore it.

-edit-

That aeronoise feature is very cool, I'll add that to the wish list on the Maxwell forum!
