No. of CPU Cores & RAM Assignment

Recommended Posts

How is RAM assigned to Multi Core CPUs??

i've noticed on a few occasions that renders i send to our dual quad cores fail to render with backburner showing "an unexpected error occured" which i usually take to mean its run out of RAM. We have backburner set to try each machine 4 times before moving the image onto another node, the images in qustion crashed 4 times on four separate dual quads.

However when the same images have been sent to our dual dual core machines they have rendered no problem, 1st time, only slower...?

Am i correct in thinking that the available RAM is split equally between the no. of cores?? i.e if 2GB is available each core on an 8 core setup will recieve 256mb of RAM where as on a 4 core setup each core will recieve 512mb of RAM??

If this is the case in my logic an 8 core machine is going to render quicker than a 4 core machine, however it is more likely to crash during rendering due to not having enough RAM available for a given core??

With bucket render maybe there is some math you said above.

I noticed that QuadCore is memory hungry, also XP x64 use more memory than 32bita.

For quad core 4GB+XP x64 is a must, I think.

You can go with 2GB but you will never know when you will get some scene with huge number of trees ,cars, peoples...heavy geometry etc....

Even 8GB for standalone workstation can be used on right way (with no render farm etc...)
