maxs
hi, my actual pc-configuration is below. was quite ok so far, but since i am using 3d trees, cars and so on, polygonnumbers are rising rapidely, and workflow i not ok anymore. moving objects (with adaptive degradation on) or moving in a cam/perspective window takes enourmos times. i heared about, for 3dsMax optimized graficcards (quadro fx....) where memory is qite low but workflow should be perfect with them. would be thankfull for some informations. AJLynn
2x1GB plus 2x512MB is 3GB. It will work in dual channel mode if the pairs are 1.5GB each. Anyway that's not the important part. Display speed is a function of CPU speed and video card speed, and which 3D display technology you're using. Two questions: a 3.4GHz dual what, exactly? What version of Max? In 8 or 9 you're better off using DirectX/Direct3D display mode, which benefits little from a Quadro card - a newer, faster Geforce card will help more in this case. AJLynn
This is completely pointless. Max, you can ignore any discussion of memory, but check what I mentioned, and see if there are any more ways to optimize. Display as box, or if you use Vray just use Vray Proxy for the trees and stuff, use instancing when you can, for the far off trees try making them 2D (see the Visualization Insider documents on the subject). The fewer polys you need to process, the better.
maxs
thanks for your replies. first, there are 3gb ddr2 ram on the board. i didnt want to put more in it as my system is on 32 bit, and so far i know 32 bit can only compute max2gb ram per process. another reason was the budget. @ AJLynn: 1.) i dont know which type of dualcore exactly there is on the mainmoard. when i bought the pc from a local dealer i made up my mind which prozessor i want (cache etc.) but this is 1 1/2 years ago, and i dont know anymore. (was not the best and not the cheapest one, payed about 400-500 Dollar for it) i dont want to take off the cpu fan, and even dont know if there are relevant any infoson the cpu. suggestions how i can find out? 2.) I use Max 8 withe open Gl, will try the Direct 3D 3.) "In 8 or 9 you're better off using DirectX/Direct3D display mode, which benefits little from a Quadro card - a newer, faster Geforce card will help more in this case." Can you tell me why little benefit with a Quadro card? always heared quadro cards are the most professional stuff, special drivers and so on. if geforce, can you approve one, budged about 500 Dollar. thought about gf 8800 gts or gtx. thank you very much
AJLynn
You can find your CPU name under the System control panel, no need to open the case. If it's a Pentium D, one option you would have would be to split your $500 between a faster Geforce 7000 series and a Core2 Duo E6850 - if your MB supports the CPU, it would be a relatively simple upgrade. A 3.0GHz Core2 Duo is approximately as fast as a 6.0GHz Pentium D would be if there were such a thing.
maxs
seems that i have a " intel® Pentium® D CPU 3,4 Ghz" prozessor. did´nt know there are this differences between dual core and core 2 duo. last question. what do you think about 64 bit system, where much more ram can be handeled by ervery single process. i always thought that cpu is important for renderspeed, ram, graficcard-driver are important for workflow? what brings 4 gig ram for workflow, when i could use them on a 64 bit syst. Hazdaz
MAXS you already have quite a speedy system right there (including you videocard)... can you post up an image of any specific scenes you are having issues with? or is it most scenes you work with? or any more info on the specific things that slow you down? unless these are enormously high poly scenes your PC shouldnt have too many issues. do you have tons of other stuff running that are sapping up CPU cycles? maxs
i was quite satisfied with my configuartion, until i began do work with hires cars, trees an so on in my scenes. i have no problem with rendertimes, but with the workflow in the viewboards, when i want to adjust a camera or move a hires object. grading viewport settings down is one way to make workflow acceptable, but its not perfect to see comlex objects just as boxes. i speek of scenes with about 2 million polygons. not to imagine what happens when i want to make a really big scene - therefore i wand to be prepared. my pc is checked by a friend of mine who has administrator knowledge, so i think there should not run to many prozesses in the backgound which slow down the syst. notamondayfan
i dont think any current card will display that amount of polygons at real time. maybe you could restructure your work flow? i have a 1 gig graphics card, and it still struggles with trees in large numbers, so i still have to be organised with layers, xrefs, etc inorder to keep a fast workflow.
