Questions about degrees

I have been working at an architectural firm for about a year now doing visualization, and animation. I am looking to get into it a little more, because we don't have alot of call for it here. Everything I know was self taught by playing with the programs when I got here. My question is do any of you know of any type of degree or what I need to pursue, to get a job in either visualization or animation? Other than just having a portfolio.

a degree in architecture such as a 4 year bachelor's degree or a 5 year professional degree normally helps. Being able to understand how construction works and have a design oriented brain is always a bonus when doing visualization.... but it's not necessary. I've seen people with graphic design degrees that are good renderers.

There are only a small handful of schools that you can get a degree in visualization, (don't ask me where they are, they've come up once or twice in threads here).... but like I said they're rare.

Like you said it all comes down to your portfolio in most cases. If you are looking to join an architecture firm that has a viz dept, they will most likely have a prerequisite of an architectural degree..... but for most specialized firms a killer portfolio is all you need to get in the door.

Yeah just work on the portfolio, aim to learn something new you do with every piece and just work it up (sounds easy ay!) with your architectural background and what your learning there I think your already on a better route than going to college to study

yes i agree with previous posters favoring a strong portfolio vs. degree....many designers are lured to [for profit] learning institutions as means to enter the CG rendering market [such as myself years ago]....the bottom line is money and how much you can make for the company you represent....there are millions if not billions of people with degrees....the quality and capability of your work is the only thing that really matters in this business....that is unless you want to be a professional architect, degree required ....but you wouldn't be here if that is your goal......print two of everything you do...one for the company, one for yourself....
