mfured20
hey guys. i dont do a lot of modeling in max, mostly i just import models for rendering. even so, i really should know how to do this, and im not sure how. i have imported a bunch of petal shapes, which they now want to have rounded edges, as if i ran a router along their edge. the main problem is just that there are a lot of them, and i would have to do them all to accomodate different views. is there a quick way to do this, or should i just go in and chamfer each edge individually? Thanks!!!
Fran
Hi Matt, Are the different colors representative of different materials, or just object colors? I would combine all the petals into a single mesh with the Attach List option - select one petal mesh and attach the others. If the colors are represented by materials, max will set a material ID for each different mat. [Edited] Then highlight Edge in the Editable Mesh stack and select "Select Open Edges". Go to your Front viewport and de-select any edges you don't want chamfered. Then select all the mesh vertices (ctrl-a with Vertex highlighted in the Editable Mesh stack). Click Selected in the Weld rollout. Go back to Edge mode, then just input the chamfer value you want. I hope this works for you. I just did a quick test in Max 9. Claudio Branch
Fran has the right approach in mind... Just use Editable Poly and don't forget to use Auto Smooth after selecting all of the faces. Here is a quick test I did as well.
mfured20
Hi Fran! thanks for the prompt reply... i had thought about doing something like that, i often use the attach function for creating vray proxies, but the whole picture hadn't really solidified in my mind. thank you very much! mfured20
thanks Claudio, i will keep the autosmooth in mind. Thanks!
Fran
Fran has the right approach in mind... Just use Editable Poly and don't forget to use Auto Smooth after selecting all of the faces. I didn't see a way to easily select outer edges with epoly. So I used editable mesh instead. Am I missing something?
a_w
If you're rendering with Mental Ray, you could apply an Arch&Design material to those petal shapes and then adjust the material's rounded corners parameter (in the Special Effects rollout menu). Vray will do it too, but it's limited in both MR and Vray. I think actual geometry manipulation is in order in this case.

Just go to a front or side view and select all the bottom edges and you are done...
Fran
Just go to a front or side view and select all the bottom edges and you are done... But that also selects all the interior edges, if there are any, right?
Claudio Branch
Yes Fran, you are correct about that. My geometry did not have any interior edges because of the way I modeled the shapes
Fran
Yes, I imported an obj file converted from Rhino 3dm in Moi, and there were no interior edges. Imported 3ds or dwg is a mess though.
caffa
If there were any interior edges, as poly you could select the bottom polygons and convert the selection to the edges that border those polygons, just by holding down shift while you do it
