sdds
hi there, I am looking to get a pc so I can run max and autocad without having to borrow a computer, as I am currently doing.. atm have 2 powermacs (not intel) g4's so no luck there running boot camp and XP. I don't want to spend lots of money and will still be using my mac's with photoshop, c4d etc - so maybe a second hand pc would be the way to go.. If you guys have any pointers, would be great.. someone suggested building my own, not sure though I am no wizz kid.
AJLynn
Have a look at this and see if you think you're up to it, though a cheap PC from a store or a used one is going to be cheaper.
ctk111
Thanks for taking the time to write up your process and specs. I'm thinking about building my first pc and others insight and experiences are appreciated.
sdds
well in theory it doesn't look 'to' bad.... I would be concerned about parts fitting correctly and coating things in this thermal stuff etc. am sure I am being a pussy though lol. how long would putting a computer together take roughly? sdds
just had another thought, is it possible to run osx on a pc, can I build my computer and run both xp and osx on it? prob a dumb question...lol
AJLynn
Erm... that's not a subject for this board BTW I did that build in an afternoon including setting up Windows but I've done it before. The first time I did it I had all kinds of problems and had to keep going back and fixing things, but it does seem like these days there are fewer opportunities for errors. sdds
Was thinking of building it, but kind of want it quickly so I can return a mates. (still open to building though if I can get the parts quickly - and know what to get).. My needs are: 1) running autocad & max 2) connecting to the internet 3) rendering 4) save money as much as possible.. all my compositing app, ps, aftereffects etc. are on my mac's. so I am quite happy to get the basics now and upgrade or get a new machine later as my needs change.. A dell I am looking at atm with an intel core 2 duo processor (up to 6700), 4gig ram, 128mb ATI Radeon X1300 video card. I am not really sure what I will need in a CPU & video card.. STRAT
i use http://www.cad2.com/ these guys specifically cater to 3d cad work stations (c4d in particular). I've just purchased a few super fast computers off them at excellent prices. and they're wonderfull to chat to. if you speak to them ask for a mike leech and mention steve leworthy from HMA architects

STRAT
the only problems i'm suffering with at this point in time is i've yet to upgrade my windowsXP from 32bit to 64bit. the normal (32bit) windows will only allow the maximum of 2 MB usage of RAM. (the 3 GB switch isn't much to shout about). I have 4 MB of RAM, so unless i switch to my Mac OS and use C4D in a mac (yes, im running windows perfectly on a mac using bootcamp) i cant use all the RAM. sdds
Don't fully understand mate, are you saying windows xp 32bit UI will only use 2mb of ram thus slowing down your interface but osx will use all available? (forgive my ignorance:o).. running an intel mac then mate?, I just have 1 g4 laptop & g4 desktop could run a vp but would be slow..Had a look at the site, serious stuff..makes me realise how little I know about hardware. STRAT
windows xp 32bit, (which most of us commonly own) even running on a 64 bit machine, will ONLY use and recognise a maximum of 2 gig of RAM. Doesn't slow the interface down so to speak, it just doesn't allow you to use your full RAM potential. whereas the mac and it's 32bit os will use all RAM you can throw at it. Yup, running both a pc and intel macs. i'm running on a mac because they're smoother, faster and more importantly, infinately more stable than a pc. i'm using bootcamp, so no slowdown compaired to running a virtual outlet to Windows from within a mac os. And running xp on my mac using bootcamp is fantastic. i wouldn't even know i'm on a mac. and then, C4D runs soooooooooo much more faster and efficiently on a mac, so when i want to use C4D all i do is re-boot my mac in mac os mode, and render in C4D utilising all RAM and resources available. best of both worlds. (acad is beautiful to use in windows mode on a mac too).
STRAT
\edit the current solution we're going to do is upgrade to winXP 64 bit, rather than Vista (which will also solve the RAM problem). we're considering that winXP64bit will be smoother and more compatible as an upgrade to our current systems than jumping into the unknown with a resource hungry o.s. like Vista. sdds
thanks, I get ya.. you don't happen to know of any good second hand mac dealers, because a new intel mac pro is rather past my atm budget?
