deanomagino
Hi every one. I am in the stages of looking for a new machine but am at odds as to get a laptop or desktop. Obviously the desktop will be more powerful, but i intend to go traveling round the world in about 14 months time so any decision on a new machine must consider this. luckily with our proffession you can work from any were and thats what i intend to do... Although i dont want to be compromised in those 14 months leading up to my travels... i was wondering how well do good laptops function? i will be doing mostly 3d stills using max, vray etc and small animations on the odd occasion...? i have a attached a quote for a laptop and desktop for you to see...? i am still an intermediate visualizer but have some clients which means im still learning particularly how create fast and quality render... also a crit on the the quote given by CAD2 qwould be helpful and if any knows of any good deals? Thanks
kris McIsaac
14 months is a long time, why not get a desktop machine now and a laptop later. By then the PC will be due for some upgrades and a new laptop will probebly out perform it in its 14 month old state. Another thing I would think about is what are you comfortable travelling with. A laptop is a good target for someone to "borrow" so the more you spend the more you can loose. Infact you maybe able to pick up a good second hand one that has just been borrowed from someone else. Anyway in 14 months time your mobile phone will be as fast as a current laptop.

Tommy L
Theyre both nice machines. My advice: Go with the desktop, but cut back a little and you'll save alot. Get the next quad down (6600) get a gaming graphics card, dont get the 10k HHD. Also, make sure he puts the brands into the quote. Things like 'Fitted with High Quality Power Supply Unit' dont tell you anything and he'll fit the cheapest component he can get. Find out what a "CAD2 Custom ‘Quiet’ Cooling Solution for Prolonged System Life" and "CAD2 High Quality Black Workstation Chassis – 3385" is. Taking a laptop travelling? Thats insane. A decent workstation laptop (if you intend to earn as you travel) is going to be HEAVY and EXPENSIVE and INSURED. Forget it! Take some time off! Use internet cafes. Thats what I did. Its bad enough watching your wallet everywhere you go. Dont know about you, but Im white, chubby and have a 'criminal bullseye' right where my pocket is..... AJLynn
That seems like a lot of money for what's really a pretty average machine by today's standards. Its main advantage is that it has a Quadro, but if you're on Autocad and Max the Quadro doesn't make much difference anymore. For the money I think you should be able to get a Macbook Pro and it actually would be portable...
Tommy L
Andrew, They pay a lot more for hardware in the UK. I agree its expensive, but not outrageous for what it is.
deanomagino
Thing is i will be going for about 18 months. although i will get a work permit for Australia and stay there for most of the trip... basically the trip will be through Asia, missing Europe, down to Australia for about 9 months then up through south America.. i suppose lugging a laptop through that is madness, but i need to stay intouch with this industry...? BobM
I had this sent to me today and is worth a look even though I prefer laptops for the travel benifits http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?lang=&product=ca-0013
Aaron2004
Battery life aside, I think that there would be something sexy about setting something to render, then sight-seeing with it still rendering in your backpack. Aaron
gfa2
I've taken my Alienware (brick) laptop to Europe 7 or 8 times and it gets old real quick. The Alienware is a work horse, but my back will never be the same . If you go with a laptop pay attention to the weight of that thing. The overall weight difference between my HP zd7000 and the Alienware is noticable. Don't forget the weight of the power supply, they can add quite a bit.
