Can WinXP-64 run on Intel Core2 Quad CPU?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I just discovered this site, and it looks like it should be very helpful to me and my coworkers. Our office is expanding, so I configured a new system from Dell, with CAD (Spirit) and rendering (Sketchup and i-render) in mind, and want to know if the OS is going to work at all.

Dell's site is a bit ambiguous, saying that their Intel Core 2 Quad Processor can run 64 bit apps, but it doesn't go as far as saying the CPU is 64bit. Here is the quote from the Dell site:

Dell PrecisionTM 390 workstations are built using world-class processors designed to deliver pure workstation power. The latest Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors feature two or more processor cores with up to 8MB total L2 cache to help increase overall processor performance for compute intensive workstation class applications and in multi-tasking situations. L2 cache is used to store recently-accessed data, sparing the computing cores from the slower process of retrieving it from RAM or hard drive storage. And thanks to Intel’s EM64T architecture, multi-core Intel processors are capable of running both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

This is the system that I put together:

Dell Precision 390

CPU- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6660 (2.4GHz/1066MHz/2x4MB L2/Quad-core/VT)

OS- Windows XP Pro 64bit edition

Video Card- 256MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX 3450

RAM- 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 (2Dimms)

Do any glaring problems jump out at anyone? With this setup, does it even make sense to use a 64bit OS?

I have already ordered this system since we are bringing in the new user next week, and hated to rush things, but if there are glaring issues, it may not be too late to make a change. Dell's Order Status says it's still in the Production phase.

Dell's not lying and they won't actually install a non-functioning version of Windows. It will work fine.

However, the cost/benefit probably isn't optimized. The Quadro 3450 is more expnsive than high-end Geforce cards that are as good for these purposes.
